This amazing Mississippi pot roast cheesesteak is made with what is arguably one of the best braised beef recipes ever. If you've never tried Mississippi pot roast, prepare to be shocked. The meat is super flavorful, rich and beefy, and makes one of the best sandwiches you will ever have.

Ah yes, the famous and amazing Mississippi pot roast recipes. I found it many years ago and have loved it ever since. This take on it really opens the mind to new possibilities for this great dish. Also it is just as good as a pork shoulder recipe, just switch the au jus powder for brown gravy mix and its equally amazing. Actually it doesn't even matter too too much whether you use brown gravy or au jus for either version. This is a great recipe to experiment with add your own veggies or whatever, mushrooms onions and potatoes are all good choices.

the only time I run into that problem with the slow cooker staying in pre-heat on the IP is when I have used the Saute setting first. I counter the problem by pulling the pan out when I am done sauteing, then set the thick bottom of the pan into cool water. The instant pot doesn't like switching to a lower temp after it's been at a high temp, and that thick plate holds the heat for a long time. Yes, I learned it after trying to figure out what the problem was.

I make a version of this in my Instant Pot. I don’t use packet mixes. Instead, I use the mix of dried herbs that I use to make homemade ranch dressing plus a tablespoon or so of powdered milk. And instead of dry gravy mix I use a couple heaping teaspoons of Vegemite and a dash or two of Worcestershire sauce. And I use the pressure cook setting rather than slow cook. Comes out just fine and doesn’t take nearly as long.

So, I made a Mississippi roast once before, but I thought the ranch taste was too powerful. Admittedly, I'm not the biggest ranch fan, but I don't mind it usually. Is there something I can use besides ranch for the roast Or if I leave it out entirely, should I do an extra packet of the au jus I'd like to try making it again.

In much of the Midwest, primarily outside of Chicago(who'd be unhappy with us, this is what we call an Italian Beef sandwich, and its one of the most celebrated parts of our potluck culture. If you reserve some of that juice and serve it on the side, we'd even call it a french dip.

The magic is the MSG in the ranch powder. It's hard to believe people are still afraid of MSG in this day and age. Even though it's naturally found in foods from fruits, nuts and vegetables to meats and cheeses. Even our own bodies produce glutamate.

I followed this to the letter today and making these for the big game tomorrow. Although in crock pot after 5 hours the beef may be a little too far. I would probably adjust the time to 4 hours next time. Otherwise absolutely delicious

Those lid clamps are only for transporting the crock pot. Shouldn't use them when cooking because it will shorten the lifespan of the rubber seal on the lid. At least, that's what my crock pot manual tells me.

Chef John nooooo! That’s not cheese whiz! Lolol. For though, aerosol cheese is not the whiz! It’s the jarred cheese sauce or equivalent. Big taste and texture difference. But omg love Mississippi pot roast

My mom has been making pot roast like this for a few years now, and we live for it. Making it into cheesesteaks, though. that's NEXT LEVEL. Thanks, Chef John! What an awesome idea.

As a Philly native, I recommend a sourdough sandwich roll if you can find one. They’re closer to the real deal Philly cheesesteak rolls (not the kind you find in tourist traps.

Reminds me of a recipe my sister in law gave me for Italian beef, only using different magic powder packets. Definitely making this beef for serving with rice.

I remember watching you years and years ago, glad to still see the same format being used, feels like videos haven't changed a bit and still the food looks excellent

I got worried you were not doing a super bowl recipe and I'd be on my own Sunday. I lost count how many years I've been doing the Chef John Super Bowl food item now.

Last I checked, New Orleans isn't in Mississippi. Nevertheless, this recipe in sandwich form almost reminds me of the Ropa Vieja recipe, but still delicious.
