A variation for this recipe occurred to me for those wanting to try other fillings or who prefer more tender seafood: When preparing the dough, wrap the pieces around a cylinder of crumpled aluminum foil about 12 long and 1 wide (about the size of making a tight 'o' with your index finger and thumb; use as many cylinders as needed to avoid rolls touching when they puff, then dress and bake them per instructions. While the rolls bake, any filling can be sauteed in a pan and then tucked into the rolls once they're slipped off the cylinder (a butter knife might be needed to loosen things. The insides of the rolls probably could also be brushed with melted garlic butter if feeling zesty or to help hold things in place. Chef John has shared yet again another fun and clearly versatile recipe!

For Pigs (of the Sea) in a blanket I use the Pillsbury Crescent Rounds instead of Crescent Rolls. They come in strips instead of triangles so there is no need to roll and cut. Using Lil Smokies you can cut each of the eight strips into thirds for 24; my guess is cutting each in half for 16 would work for large shrimp.

I think I'll just use the triangles to wrap and call them shrimp in diapers instead of blankets. Actually, i found a roll of crescent dough that isn't perforated in triangles, so that's what i will use, if i don't get ambitious and make from scratch.

We are in a time line where cook shrimp in pastry and go oh man the egg gonna break the bank
If i could explain this concept of this to somebody in the medieval times they would drill a hole in my skull to let the bad spirits out

You are after all the blanketed prawn to get your party on.
How about making Japanese octopus-filled dumplings called as takoyaki Although it may be difficult sans a cooking pan with spherical indentations.

Sorry to be a dork here but the first strikes in recorded history are the ones the artisans working on the burial complex's in Egypt, and it was the law they could strike if they weren't given beer

I'm picturing the flakiness of bread mixing with that unique sinewy rumble of a bite into shrimp. My mind is telling me those don't taste good.
A rare thought when watching a chef John video.

I LOVE that the silpat isn’t brand new. It drives me crazy to watch cooking shows where they use pots, pans, trays, cooking sheets that seem to have just been taken out of the packaging

Another two nations separated by a common language moment. Here in the UK (where they were invented) pigs in blankets are chipolatas wrapped in bacon. Sausages in pastry are sausage rolls.

Maybe it's high time some artificial powdered egg wash substitute is created so that you don't have to use up a whole egg for the rare occasion you need some colour

As kids, we always knew when Dad was cooking. Freaking garlic. Also, a pot holder found in the middle of a meat loaf. I think the secret ingredient was scotch.

Chef John, to be totally pedantic, the first strike in recorded history was from Egyptian pyramid builders who didn't get their ration of onions and beer.

Little tip to get 6ths a little more evenly, divide the dough in thirds first, then those in half. A little easier to judge and get more evenly
