Spicy grilled squid (Grilled calamari, ojingeo-tonggui: )

This spicy grilled squid is a favorite in Korean bars, and if you've ever been to one, you couldn't have missed it. A huge grilled squid covered in shiny, juicy, spicy sauce in the middle of a table full of drinkers. It's not a dish you eat alone, you share it with friends, the more the merrier, usually with makgeolli or soju. But it's not just for bars and booze, if you and your family like squid and spicy food, it makes a great side dish with rice at dinner. But whether it's in a bar or at home, it's best presented to the table still sizzling, and then cutting the rings with scissors just before eating. Watching that performance will stimulate anyone's appetite

I love squid! The way I usually prepare it when I'm cooking it Asian style is by seasoning with salt, pepper, lemon juice and a little bit of that Sriracha-brand garlic/chili seed sauce. Once that is done I fry it up in olive oil; it's important to get it to the point where it becomes firm or it will be too slimey. After that I put in some butter and Teryaki sauce and then fry it for a bit longer until the sauce thickens a bit. Once that's done it's ready to eat. Sometimes I put a bit of sesame seeds and green onion as garnish but it's delicious either way.

Maangchi, I really love watching your videos. It's really good to know a lot about Korean food. Maangchi can I reduce the amount of honey used in this recipe? My family doesn't like the sweet taste of barbecue. The squid looks wonderful as all your recipes do.

Honestly. It looks delicious, but I've never had squid and I love seafood. Anyone reading, what's best described its flavor and consistency? I actually work as a butcher, but I don't have much knowledge on seafood other than what I've had before.

This is random but I love seeing others cut food with scissors. My friends used to laugh at me because I would cut meats with scissors and say how it was such a Korean thing to do. I say work smarter not harder! Haha!

I would marinate the squid in the sauce for a period of time before grilling it, since the squid takes just a bit of time to be well cooked. But nice recipe, anyway.
