It's funny you brought this up. When I was young, my mom had a book called Better Homes and Gardens New Cookbook. When she was not making traditional foods, she would use this book for other foods and treats. Growing up, she thought she would pass these down to my sisters. As we got older, her books became lost to time. To my mother's surprise, I was baking and cooking as I got older. When I turned 45, my sister gave me one of the greatest gifts ever. She found that same cookbook my mom used when we were kids and bought it for me. I have tried to keep it in good condition, but it being old, the books are trying to die on me, lol.

Just think that lady who furnished the newspaper made history in a few ways and we’re keeping her tradition alive! It’s great to know that future generations learn from the past in more ways than one. Who knew we’d still make these cookie bars and love them equally as much as they enjoyed them back then! Thank goodness for print type and recording.

We have a family recipe called California dream bars they’ve been passed down for generations of my family. It’s basically the same, except for we add more brown sugar, chopped pecans, coconut, and chocolate chips to it kind of like a pie crust that you make, and then pour a filling into and then it has a brownie consistency.

I love old cookbooks! There’s something about flipping through them and seeing the weird ingredients and the different ways they come together. When you were making them I thought for sure you were going to add chocolate chips! Thanks for sharing! I love the new series!

When my paternal grandma died I received her Betty Crocker cookbook published in 1950. I've never seen another cookbook like it. I love, love, love this book. I have 4 daughters, all in their 30's, who squabble over who will get the cookbook after I die.

Thank you for sharing.
I looked for years not sure if the name. It looks like one cuts strips of a very flaky dough rolled up with sugar between each layer and about 11/2 inch in width. Messy cookie but oh so good. Hope you can help me.

My mother passed away recently. She loved coconut in desserts. Her birthday was May 3, 1934, the day before the printed recipe for Dream Bars, May 4, 1934, shown in this video. I feel like she wanted me to see it. Thank you so much.

That reminds me of some butterscotch blondies I made around Christmas. They were delicious. You definitely needed to put parchment in the pan. And they did get hard on one end chewy on the other.

I love these bars. I used to make them when my son was small. If you have any leftovers, try freezing them and then eat them right out of the freezer--whole new level of yummy.

Love this idea of vintage recipes. Brings back beautiful memories of when I cooked and baked with my mom. Before devices and other forms of entertainment.

I guess it took another 10 years before they added the sweetened condensed milk and the chocolate and buttersccotch chips to that recipe for dream bars.

My mom used to make a lemon bar recipe, with a powdered sugar/lemon juice glaze. No idea what cookbook it was in! Do you have a recipe for that

I've been a really old icebox cookie recipe from a Betty Crocker cookbook. It's almost a sugar cookie, but not. I'm hoping to find it again.
