Around 1980 there was a restaurant in Muncie, Indiana named Dos Amigos that served Chinese and Mexican food and one of their specialties was Sopapillas. They would give you a little boat with sopapillas in it and when you needed more you raised a little flag on the boat and they would replace it with more! Yummy. Always honey for me. Edit: it was One Accord. Chinese, Mexican and American.

Angelica. sweet lady, a hundred years ago, when I was young, there was a restaurant that meold Mum and Dad frequented. The resonant always put a basket of Sopapillas on the table. As a kid I couldn't get enough of them! This is one I'm definitely going to try! Thanks so much for sharing the recipe and directions. Yummy Ax : )

When I was a kid, we ate at Pancho's at least once a month, sometimes more. I used my sopapillas as a spoon to scoop up & sop up whatever I had on my plate. I didn’t eat it sweet because Pancho's had a fruit & dessert bar. I loved running the little Mexican flag up the pole to ask for more sopapillas & chips & salsa! Good memories!

The first time I had sopapillas was in 1972 at a restaurant in Santa Fe with my parents. I was a picky eater but when I heard honey I was all in. This was the only way they served them. They have remained a lifetime favorite for me. It is so rare to find this just like this, plain, add honey. I can’t wait to make my own!

Thank you for sharing this recipe! I lived in NM for a few years and they bring a basket full of them in restaurants along with chips and salsa. They are SO GOOD! I have never made them, but it looks so easy so I will give them a try. Thanks again!

Yup, just as others have shared, my family traveled cross country when I was a tween, and THESE are in my memory of New Mexico. Haven't had them since, but might give this a try for the good ole days. Thanks for sharing this, Angelica!

Mmmmm! We briefly lived in Santa Fe, NM and that is where we had our first Sopapillas. My favorite way to enjoy them is with honey. I haven’t made them before, I guess it’s time. Thanks for the recipe and video!

For those that live in Texas, an even easier way is to get the uncooked tortillas at H-E-B (in the biscuit section) and just use them. Cut then and fry them just like Mama did.

I grew up in Dallas. They're usually served with butter, honey, and sometimes a shaker of sugar/cinnamon blend.
I can't find these in the PNW - now I'll try making them!

OMG when I lived in San Antonio, we used to go to this Mexican buffet ponchos! We would eat sopapillas with butter. Oh so good! I’m gonna try and make these!

I live in NM and most Mexican restaurants serve these with honey. Sometimes they are stuffed with beans, meat cheese and red or green chili.
