Homemade tamales here, in California, are going for about $30-$35 per dozen (for the meat selection); $40-$43 per dozen for the cheese and jalapeno-depending on what kind of cheese they're using. If I sold my jalapeno/cheese tamales; I would probably sell them on the higher side ($45) because of the kinds of cheese I use; and I roast all of my chiles on an open flame, so it takes a minute. And the hojas right now are $15! And my jalapeno/cheese tamales are a family secret; so when I do sell them, they aren't cheap, but I don't make a whole lot of profit either. My profit is getting all of the requests to make them. And I'm okay with that.

One year around the holidays I mentioned to my g/f at work that my boyfriend’s mother always sent a batch of delicious tamales over for us. She asked me if I wanted to learn how to make them and I said YES definitely! So her and her mom invited me over to do just that! It was so much fun but be prepared to spend some serious TIME lol it’s quite a process! We each ended up with a bunch to take home and we had a lot of fun and laughs that day! Thanks for sharing your recipe! Happy holidays! P. S. your price is very reasonable! It’s very time intensive and they are WORTH IT!

I started making my own tamales more often because here, in my city, southeast Wisconsin, tamales start at $24. 00 a dz and I've seen them go up to $32. 00 a dz, and that's at the only panderia in town that we have. But I'm not gonna lie, they're good, not 32 bucks worth, but they're good.
I've had some where ladies selling them, charged 24. The dz, but they had a lot of fat chunks and were real picoso.
But here, tamales are highly sought after and people who sell can make a good chunk of change off them.

Okay, if you’re spending $100 for the ingredients, and get $100 in profit, then what is the point You’d have to raise your prices per dozen in order for it to be worth it, right The lady we order tamales from (daughter’s exboyfriend’s mother, LOL) raised her prices from $18/dozen to $24/dozen for a while, and now it’s higher, I think. We live in LA in the SFValley. So food prices are through the roof here anyway, even before the inflation.
Love your videos! Thank you, I never knew how tamales were made!

You always make everything look so easy! (crying in appreciation lol. I've always been pretty intimidated about making tamales, but this looks pretty foolproof! I might just give this method a shot this year
Your recipes have never failed me I always get the Ya te puedes casar! comments
I'm like thank you, but I sleep very peacefully every night so I'll just keep cooking for myself and my babies
Thank you for all the help!

Tamales over here in Yuma Arizona on the border are going for $25 to $30 per dozen. I literally cannot afford to buy them from anybody or make them myself. I only like beef tamales and beef is so expensive now can't even afford that period last time I made tamales was back in 2019 and it cost me about $70 and I made 7 dozen. A trick to make the cooking go faster is to use an Instant Pot! they cook real quick in one.

It’s not unheard of to pay $20/dozen plus for tamales in Houston, TX. (Most don’t consider the labor cost, because it is work to make them delicious) You can even sell homemade salsa to go with it! It is definitely worth making everything from scratch! And if you do it right you’ll have customers for life! Great video showing the basics of making tamales.

Can't even find decent tamales in DC, too far to Latino neighborhood. Used to buy dozen for like $22 for years since pandemic.
How long did you spend doing this to justify making 'just' $100 Going to shop, making it, cleaning everything and going to sell them. $100 ain't much for all that: -( great vid though, really enjoyed it!

I lived in New Mexico in 1991-1997. Our business had the daily breakfast roach coach of assorted made fresh burritos and on Wednesday the tamales vender a dozen for $6 bucks. None of these great cooks spoke English. I think the breakfast burritos were $2. 50 more than worth it. Your video reminded me of that time.

Happy to see you aren't one of those tamale ladies who skimp on the meat filling and it's just mostly the masa. It's exactly no matter how much I'm craving them I refuse to buy them and just make them myself. $16 for a dozen ain't nothing my area they go for $35 a dozen. So that's a steal.

Another great idea to keep them warm is to 1. place aluminum foil on the inside of the container 2. Wrap a few concrete bricks with foil and place them in the oven for a few minutes 3. Add them into your foil-lined container and it keeps them warm for a long time.

Here in WA State people are selling a dozen tamales for $30. 00. I ordered my annual tamales from a local restaurant that I’ve ordered from for decades. The price they quoted me was $24. 00 a dozen only because I’ve been ordering from them for so long.

Here in the Central Valley, people are selling tamales $35 a dozen. It’s high af but they’re worth it. When I make mine for the first time for Xmas I hope I won’t ever have to buy from no one anymore if they come out right

In my small city, two years ago I sold, pork tamales for $20 a dozen.
But here the husks here are super expensive, in my opinion and I wouldn’t sell for profit because the ingredients are expensive.
I live in N. C.
