Ponmudi, Kerala, India - Early one morning we drove into the mountains of Ponmudi, into the lush jungle, home to one of the incredible indigenous tribes of India. It was an amazing experience to learn about their culture, and especially to watch them prepare a number of truly incredible cooking techniques - unlike anything else Id ever seen in the world. #India #Kerala I had no idea what or how they were going to prepare a leaf basket steamer, and I didnt even know thats what they were going to prepare from the beginning. So it was even more fascinating for me to watch them prepare this ancient, and rarely ever seen anymore Indian cooking technique. They first heated rocks in a hot fire. Then the next step is they fastened a leaf basket from a specific type of green leaf. When the rocks had heated for a few hours and were white hot, they dropped the leaves into the bottom of the leaf steamer, added in the cassava, wrapped it all in leaves, then added bamboo poles on the inside to feed in water in order to make then entire packet steam and smoke, and cook, all at the same time. The result was a flavor of cassava unlike anything else Ive had. It was steamed, but had this incredible smokiness to it. The fish was cooked differently, seasoned with chilies, and then wrapped into a banana leaf packet and tossed directly into the fire. That was cool too, and also delicious. But the highlight was the amazingly unique leaf basket steamer. It was an honor to have this opportunity to meet, hang out, and learn from this Tribal community in Kerala, India

If you like Gods Own Country that cant be surprising right? If you like to keep it that way, please stay away from the state, respecting the locals. How many chettans live like this survivalist chettan? He is living an almost an extinct lifestyle. Man, we so called urban humans( so called civilized) have a lot of crap skills like marketing, AI, Software, Finance, B2B, Hardware and the works, but, can you as a single entity survive like chettan? Please respect these individuals and their lifestyles. Else, you wont have much to enjoy except a Burj Khalifa(no offense meant. Voyeurism is a dangerous social ill, please treat yourself please dont kill this mans way of life.

people who said in the comment section that they wanna experience india. i say to you plz do come to visit our country, actually it would be a lot cheaper to you than visiting other popular nations and mostly u will be amazed at the diversity this nation has. We have 22 major languages. 22 godamit, i myself am amazed. and u will experience a food with spices u never heard of. techniques undiscovered, culture so vast a lifetime is not enough. but i will say do not come in the summer. u will die, unless u live in hot and humid nations u wont be able to cope here that easily. other than that i give a warm welcome whoever wants to visit our motherland.

Actually mark, cassava is not native to India. It was brought by the Portuguese from Africa probably. Kerala didn't have the caste system initially, when the Brahmins came in the 4th to 6th century, was this rigid structure introduced. If you were to visit the tribal communities in Malaysia, Papua, and Australia. I believe that a lot of similarities may be observed. The cooking style is just pure genius.

Hi Mark. We thoroughly enjoy your vlogs and cant wait for them to be uploaded. However there is one disrespectful and highly offensive thing that needs rectification. The smelling of the food and the way in which you do it is totally taboo in many cultures around the world. Kindly refrain from this. Thanks and keep up the good work.

The most amazing thing to me, aside from the preparation techniques, is the fact that there is zero waste Everything is natural, and there is no garbage to contribute to wastelands. Absolutely incredible Thank you to them for sharing their heritage, and to you, Mark, for bringing these phenomena to the world
