Sungei Road Laksa is one of the most legendary laksa stalls in Singapore. Get more info here: Laksa is a dish that combines the tastes and flavors of both Malay and Chinese, and one of the most famous places to eat laksa in Singapore is at Sungei Road Laksa, a small yet busy stall thats housed within a neighborhood style coffee food court shop. As soon as the stall is open, they have a line of customers, and if you come at a peak meal time or on the weekend, there could easily be 20 or even 50 people in line in front of you. Luckily, we came in the middle of the morning, so it was pretty quiet and there were just a few people in line in front of me. One of the best things about Sungei Road Laksa in Singapore is that they still cook their curry soup sauce over charcoal in a big aluminum pot, the traditional way. You stand in line, and they dont have any choice other than how many bowls of laksa you want. The bowls are quite small, so if youre really hungry, you could easily eat 3 - 4 bowls or so. The laksa is a Chinese style version, with a thin and not very spicy broth, and sliced up noodles, and all topped with a handful of fresh blood cockles, and I think Vietnamese coriander - which is the flavor that I really liked. The laksa was smooth and comforting, not spicy, and not too much spices, but a soothing blend. To me it almost tasted like clam chowder, yet it was prepared with cockles, so it was like noodle cockle chowder. They also added a small amount of smabal chili sauce to the side of my bowl to mix in, which provided a bit of extra flavor to the laksa. Overall I enjoyed my bowl of noodles at Sungei Road Laksa, and it made a wonderful quick breakfast. Sungei Road Laksa Address: 27 Jalan Berseh Open hours: 9: 30 am 5 pm on Thursday to Tuesday (closed on Wednesday) Prices: 3 per bowl of laksa How to get there: You can either walk from Bugis or Lavender MRT station, located under a complex near Jalan Berseh

The finely shredded herb is commonly referred to in Singapore as Laksa leaves (yep) or daun kesom in Malay, which is easily available in the market or supermarket. It's very aromatic and gives laksa its distinctive taste. There used to be a restaurant which made a laksa pesto pasta, yum I'm Singaporean and have never heard of Sungei Road laksa, but will definitely make a trip there to try it. My father grew up in that area. For those of you who would like a taste of laksa, try looking for the paste in the Asian grocery store. Prima makes a really good one which I give as gifts to visitors or to expat friends who have left Singapore and miss their laksa. There are many types of laksa available throughout Southeast Asia. This laksa is a lemak laksa made with coconut milk, as opposed to the famous Penang Laksa which uses tamarind juice (spicy and sour - delicious. Bon Appetite

my father brought my family there twice he claims to have started eating at this stall even before it was in this coffee shop, back when it was sold on the streets (they were illegal hawkers. hes 5 years older than singapore itself and he used to live in the lavender area, which was probably how he got to know this stall. i wonder if you have tried katong laksa. my father brought my family to eat 328 katong laksa during vesak day this year.

Not sure if you're aware of this Mark, this Laksa you had is the Peranakan Laksa There are many styles of Laksa in SE Asia, and the Peranakan style one is only/mostly found in Singapore. I guess you had a little of your long awaited 'Peranakan food fix' here before you went to Daisy's Dream Kitchen in Clementi?

Hey Mark, you are right about Sungei Road laksa being a comfort food. The broth is light & not overpowering. The slow simmering of the broth over charcoal adds to the taste. My favorite laksa stall in Singapore
