Mark, you hit some good commercial spots, but the real deal is in santa maria, where locals have been home cooking tri tip for generations! If you ever want to do a backyard tour in santa maria let me know and i will gladly hook you up with as many backyard bbqs as you want to film! Thats where tri tip comes alive! Native santa marians mostly all own at least one bbq pit, and cook tri tip regularly! Try santa maria hospitality sometime, you wont regret it! P. S. if you ever make it on a nice summer weekend just go by waller or priesker park, you will smell tri tip cooking everywhere! Santa maria style bbq is the best! Its a smoky hot, fast cook!

Hi Mark! Short story Niapomo, so back in the my Brother Pablo (RIP) was shooting pool with some guys and they said they were Niapomo we live in Piru Not to far, But never heard of it! We had to take a ride on the weekend! I moved to Texas but when we go visit first thing my relatives make is a bar b que and YES you guessed it! Tri Tip!

I don't know, 13 bucks for such a plain sandwich? Plus the parking, plus the crowds, hmm, seems kind of bland. Maybe if there some Worcestershire, choices of mustards, mayo. A cold pickle and some pickled Jalapenos perhaps. At least some chips. It looks like a leather sandwich.

Fantastic tritip! I've been loving it for decades but these restaurants serve up some next level tritip. Now on my bucket list especially since a visit to my favorite beach town, Pismo would be the first stop on a road trip from my home in the Central Valley!

That chained grill is a Santa Maria style bbq. The grate is height adjustable so you can hot sear or indirect cook over the wood coals. Makes for a best cook for smokey and crusted meats.

I was born and raised in Nipomo, how can you do a tri tip tour of California and not even mention the town tri tip was invented Santa Maria! Jockos filet is the best steak on there menu.
