In 2012, the State of California successfully banned foie gras, citing animal welfare and health concerns. Though that ban was just recently overturned, the debate continues to rage on from both sides. In this episode of The Politics of Food, chef and food writer Dave Arnold speaks to the ban's key political players, including the Chairman of the California Democratic Party, to understand how insider politics determines what we can and cannot eat. From a foie gras speakeasy to the world of animal-rights activists, Dave visits both sides of the issue and discovers why there-s so much controversy surrounding this popular delicacy. I must say it is highly suspicious and dumb of Burton to not take concerns of those who are actually been affected by the legislations and also not having visited the place even dough it is the main concerne of evrything and a true dumb thing to say there was no reason to do so and to say it is silly just pushing you away in the attemps of getting all perspectives. It just shows clearly that he actually isn't passionate about it rather more it shows that he couldn't care less about it not showing proper respect to the matter and to the reporter even dough he was nice and has not insulted him in any way. But even if this was not the case his manarisims in the actual footage of the court shows that he had no actual intest in it seemeing rather bored actually. To just blindly rely on what onthers say to you and not even fact cheking because that thing he sayed about the free roaming ducks and geese could be true but also could not be and by not having a proper look at how the animals are truly handled or the way in wich it is done even more so it seems that they are ignoring the fact that there was an actual expert veterinarean in birds that by all acounds her words should have had more weight in that matter than from the other veterinarian who has not specialised in the handeling of birds and doas only can base his opinion on a lesser degree of acuracy than the specialist had. -At least that is my opi ion alldough I don't know mutch about the matter and haven't heard of it prior to this documentary probably because I don't live even in America and have never even tasted or could even spell that food this hole thing seems a bit off. Either way I am no expert and should probably make more reserch befor even having an opinion apon this matter after all that the one in charge of the production didn't even wanted to speak is also a bit off.

So many people are saying -people care about animals but they don-t care about homeless people-. Homeless people are still living and get to be free. There-s people who care about them and support them. These animals are being tortured but because they aren-t humans, it makes it fine? Animals are helpless and can-t speak out against it and rely on us to make a change. Humans can speak out against abuse which is the difference between humans and animals. Animals are forced to endure suffering while we can speak and be heard. I-m not fully against the force feeding but I-m against the exploitative conditions they put the animals through. Rats in cages and eating the animals alive is just outright awful. However force feeding anyone is unethical unless it-s used to save the persons life. These animals are being force fed while perfectly healthy. That-s just not right.

I have a question. -If animals are being tortured then why eat non-veg? -I mean seriously, aal this is done because we eat animals and because of this eating habit of our these animal industries torture animals everywhere around the globe, and this is done just to satisfy our food habit. -If we quit eating animals these practices will end, because demand for non-veg products will not be there in markets so, these people will not do these kind of things when they will see people not demanding for meat. -Before eating meat think by your heart, that just for your taste innocent and speechless animals are getting killed, they haven't done anything wrong. -Namaste and love from India. -And god bless all of you.

I'm just an omnivore, I consume the diet of what humans are kinda meant for, meat and plant based foods. I understand that their should be no animal cruelty if anything, I'm very high up there when it comes to no animal cruelty but, I do like to eat meat just to stay smart, strong and healthy. I feel like humanity should continue to produce meat but not in a way that will send you straight to hell. We should handle meat making more humainly. Just think about it, we are the only organism in this planet that tries to get its own speices to eat only plant based foods or animal meat. We eat both. It doesn't mean everyone has to eat one thing. It's your choice. Not mine, yours.

I-m not against the practices described here of over feeding these animals, but I don-t like some of these images. I mean damn, don-t get greedy. Stop before things reach this bad. If the the bad things i see in these images don-t stop, then yes, shut it down. I do believe if the owner just has a tiny bit of compassion, and can stop before it goes too far, than I do believe it can be done in an acceptable manner. As we-ve all seen before though, will they stop and not go too far? People sometimes get too greedy, or even don-t care at all. It-s not that hard to have cameras to monitor the production facility.

I am by no means a PETA activist or a tree hugger. In fact I will shoot an elk an eat it, but there is no reason to do that. You don't see Native Americans jamming massive amounts of food down a deer's throat before they kill it to eat it. You don't see tribes in history who are surviving off the land, torturing an animal before it's consumed. Just like how police have to be sprayed in the eyes with pepper spray in Police Academy, cooks who do that to geese should themselves be force-fed 30 lbs of pizza dough just to see what it feels like so they can be sure that that's exactly what they want to do.

Yeah well they sure don't look like they are into it. Didn't change my mind. You are clearly abusing animals for your own enjoyment. Disgusting, and I am no Californian. I am conservative and I love eating meat. I am from Texas and I also don't believe in dogfighting in case you were curious. You are making an animal eat more than it would choose to. The fact that they must be trapped in the area and grabbed by the head then to have a tube shoved down thier throat is pretty f'd up. I don't see any two ways about it.

Someone compared this to eating dogs in china. Eating dogs are one thing (which many asian countries also do besides China btw. The Yulin festival is an event where they torture the dogs for sport before consuming the meat. That is the inhumane part. Eating meat that-s taboo to us might be normal for people from different cultures. But Yulin festival is a sadistic form of entertainment. Having said that, I don-t think it falls into the same category as foie gras.

I love meat, I eat meat but from animals that have been fed well, treated well, left to run around happy - and that ate natural food and in normal quantities. Plus I only eat it meat 2-3 times from which one source is fish. If only all of us we would only eat meat moderately, there would be enough space to raise animals in a humane way, let them run around and enjoy normal food without injecting them steroids and all kind of crap.

-16: 45 the farm had an opportunity to contribute to the legislation that was proposed, was granted a seven year phase out period, and the process was democratically decided upon. at the end of the phase out period, when the legislative restriction, was imposed, the farm owner then has little excuse. ---also gives a flying frack about foie gras? is this the hill to die on? its just another indulgence of the elites.
