I suggest that black is not the best to use in landscapes and other paintings, on its own. By mixing your own earthy tones, your palette can become quite versatile for any situation muskndusk: I paint cats and use payne's grey instead of black, mixing it with other colours if I need it to be tinted. Prussian blue is useful too, mixed with burnt sienna or burnt umber this gives a very velvety black, great for cat fur.

Until I found out about real black paint from tub, trap light. I got lucky by done having black paints with other colours done mix in. When sale person ask me do you want warm or cool black? I got cool black because it has blue and warm black had red. My point is I got lucky.

I used the pthalo blue/cad. red mix for the black fur on a cow painting but it looks too blue. Should I use black to darken it in this case? I'm really struggling with this cow hair!

For your black and white dandelion painting, did you also mix your own black for the background? Or is that an exception?
