Ever wondered where the plants in your succulent garden ACTUALLY come from? Better yet, what about learning how to grow succulents from a master succulent plant grower who produces millions per year? In today's video, I travel up to the Plants by Post nursery in San Jose, CA to talk with Dylan Toms, a botanist and master succulent cultivator. You'll learn how to water succulents, how to propagate succulents, and the many intricacies of their care that you WON'T find online

Haha, I can feel the home grower audience cringing at the way he roughly handles these plants.
Having grown for resale my whole life I can safely say that the plants will be just fine, all growers are rough with their plants when working with literally tens of thousands of plants.
You cant imagine how roughly we handle a load of Boston ferns I literally throw them in piles at times
I used to revel in freaking out the public when Id sell at market playing that goofy game where I pretend Im bending down to pick a plant up, then kick it a few feet, exclaim hey you! Get back here! Then continue to bend down then kick it again and again 20 years later and I still have people pop up that remember me playing this game and the look on peoples faces as Im kicking around a $25 plant that I intend to sell.

all these comments about how the guy handled them lmao, hes a pro, you are home gardeners, he knows what hes doing and he knows they arent delicate, harden up you bunch of pansies, hes a professional that grows them for a living and you are all acting like you know better, pretty obvious who knows more, the guy that grows millions of them and needs the highest % to propagate for profit, or the lonely home gardener who thinks you need to be delicate lmao

I agree % that the blooms are beautiful. I do have a love/hate relationship with them. They take a lot of energy away from the succulents and can also misshapen a perfect rosette. If their not misshapening my rosette I'll let them grow a little stem and then cut them. Place them in water and watch them blossom.

Rewatch this, you are a pretty bad interviewer. Consistently interrupting to input your two cents and waiting closed lipped to speak. We want to hear what the person is saying as the expert what we don't want is you to talk over and interrupt and to watch you try to keep your mouth shut.

It's hard to have a variety of plants with all different needs. Keep one dry, one with a humidifier, this direction window, that direction window. I mean gezz. how do people maintain all those temperatures in their homes? Ac in one room, heater in another?

Im from South Africa and trust me, we dont have Sahara deserts here. We have some open veld thats it. Most succulents that are shown in this video that are native to South Africa cant even be bought here anymore.

Do you the name or street this farm is on? I am assuming toward Morgan Hill area, South of San Jose. I am moving to central valley and will be able to garden and wanted succulents on the covered patio. Thank you

Ugh Ive tried to propagate my succulent leaves and Ive never even seen them get to the root stage! I dont put them in too direct sunlight and I never water the leaves but they just scab and rot. Any ideas?

I had a succulent that thought it was a bonzai tree and grew branches instead of growing larger. We reproduced it and the little succulents how do that too. I need to know why they do that?
reply

this dude is a total dickwad to the plants not saying hes a dick but to the plants yeah! i dont think he loves the plants he just loves the growing business of it. missed me with this shit
reply

hey, so I have a possibility of getting a peyote, that's about 8cm in diameter. When it says like that, is it just the one button? And how do I get more than one button to grow?
reply

You should have shared the name of this succulent wholesaler and pointed to their website. They gave the time for the interview but they lost a chance to promote their business.

I am so jealous how he is in succulent heaven and I don't even have one succulent because they aren't available near me even though I am such a huge fan of succulents
reply

I know he knows what he is doing but the way he slide those trays over the other trays makes me feel like but it's true the plants are alright with it.
