I always wanted to plant sunflowers but I've never been succsesful. My first attempt all died in a hail storm, it was still very small and could not stand the force. Some survived but it was really damaged and I kinda also damaged the roots while tranferring it to the ground becauss I started it on a pot. My second attempt was recently. 2 weeks ago, my sunflowers were pretty healthy and slightly overgrowing the pot so I was going to to tranfer it to the ground. However, the day after I planted them on the ground, I saw that they were eaten by something. Nothing remained, no leaves and no stem. I want to guess that it was ants or some kind of wasp (I think some bee-fly-like insect lives under the soil where I planted it. The tulips have survived well since it was not damages in any way. I didn't give up yet, I tried again but this time, I decided to plant it to a large outdoor pot. I'm not sure if they're surviving since I planted the seeds a few days ago

Question- Regretfully an entire planting bed that was supposed to be a flower garden years before was completely overtaken with Bishops weed after a tree planted beside it had to be removed. Natural efforts over the proceeding 5 years to eradicate that weed were unsuccessful and extremely taxing. Last year, fed up. We hit it with pesticides repeatedly. . I hated this but was so done. I eventually would like to grow food in this area since due to the removal of the tree, I now have a sunny space. Your video made me think. Would it be possible to help remove the chemicals from the ground by planting sunflowers here then at the end of the season, disposing of them rather than adding them to my compost? Could they naturally remove the toxins from the ground or am I just better off using landscape tarp and adding new soil all together?

Mine were 14 inches wide last year! I cut the heads off to dry but they molded from the inside cuz i guess there was still alot of moisture in the head even though the seeds were all dry and starting to fall out everywhere. now i have a bunch of volunteers coming up this year in random spaces between the flagstone
What do you recommend for gophers and earwigs? Last year a gopher got my largest sunflower This year, my garden is invaded with earwigs and theyre totally munching my sunflowers and hollyhocks

Dynamic accumulators. THAT is an awesome description! I did not know that they improve the soil until this video. My biggest problem is that the wood-chucks/ground squirrels seem to just chew them off and leave them laying on the ground. What variety produces the most prolific pollen through the growing season? That's the greatest benefit to my honey bees. Thank you, and a thumbs up! Much appreciated.

Will be growing lots of sunflowers this year. They get attacked by snails and birds when they're younger in my garden so I like to keep them under a small clear plastic covering until they get a 3 or 4 inches tall. I've been putting the seeds in just laying them flat and they still come up just fine. I've heard that you can make tea out of the leaves and use the stalk to make flour.

I started sunflowers indoors under lights and they are growing so fast and tall that the stems cannot support them. I have never had the lights further than 2 inches so I wouldn't encourage them to stretch.
My question: Can I repot them into a larger pot (still too cold here (6b) and bury the stem like a tomato?

I swear my phone listens to me cause Ive been telling my husband and parents that I wanna grow a sunflower and I already bought some seeds but Im waiting til the middle of May to plant it, and your video came across my feed! I have a question. So, I've got sunflowers growing in my backyard due to me feeding the birds and I decided to let them grow instead of mowing them down. Now, I have one of the sunflowers facing north when I've heard they're supposed to face the East. is there a reason for this? I'm just curious.

i am TERRIFIED of holding or touching sunflowers. they are so pretty but once it comes to getting close to them or trying to handle them (esp to renew the flower beds) i get so much anxiety. i still plant them lol. just seeing you touch those sunflowers has me all grossed out lol

I never get the opportunity to harvest the sunflower seeds because the squirrels climb up the Jack and the beanstalk trunk and cut the whole head off. They drag it down the alley and feast on it. Last year I had two 12 sunflowers. Grandparents brought their young grandchildren to see it.

Just a little info Sunflowers will follow the sun maybe you just have something different. When living in Italy, we had a Sunflower field next to our house. The plants followed the sun even when full grown. Many fields there had Sunflowers that did the same thing.

I transplanted a bunch outside yesterday (Eastern WA 6B. I guess my grow lights were not strong enough. They were really tall and floppy. I saw a video that I can bury them deep. Well see if they make it.

i just started growing some sunflowers in a self watering pot and its only about 8 inches deep. are they going to not grow because they cant send a taproot 6 ft deep? should i transplant it to soil?

according to a Johnny seeds article pollenless varieties still produce nectar for bees and butterflies, and if you have pollenless and regular varieties mixed together they may still produce seeds

We did sunflowers when I was a kid in our back yard in the Bronx. After we moved out of that house it took me almost 20 yars but as an adult in Florida I'm finally planting sunflowers again
