Tree Peony Garden Answer Jjjj: I'm in a zone 11 for you guys, but in Australia. tips and tricks for both herbaceous and tree peonies. For both if you can give them a microclimate that is say, under a pergola or trees with about 50% - bright indirect light. That's to protect from our insane UV. As for dormancy, whatever your coldest month is - spread bags of ice on the ground around your plants, once or twice a week depending on day temps, for four weeks. Make sure you keep the ground moist in summer, and if you can work a dish of water or fountain nearby to moisten the summer air somewhat, not too much - that's it. Gorgeous peonies.
Some places are too humid and hot in winter, like far North Queensland, and they'll mildew despite Bordeaux spray etc, and the flower suffer - but you might get two seasons with luck.
We have Mediterranean climate, only with extreme heat in summer - 120f, anyone? But that means it's just cold enough, and wet in winter. So luckily we can have cacti AND peonies the same garden - it's all about microclimates!

Asked earlier-non tree peonies- have long established large plants- about 20-30 across in circle that grow into double wire ring supports & the annual problem is flower stalks aren't strong enough to support their double flowers! What will create stronger stems so that cutting for inside becomes the only option? I'd prefer having them outside longer but rainy Spring in PA 2018 made that impossible. Help! I got some sprinkle container of fertilizer, I think 12-4-8 but know little about it & think it likely needs more acid feeding but is that right? We're in the woods except for peony beds-inset with lawn all around, AM sun & dappled in afternoon. Thanks- enjoy your videos a lot.

Just one piece of advice, at about 4: 15 in you talk about shoots coming from the ground and to remove them. Tree peonies are not truly trees, theyre a perennial shrub, and can have tree peony shoots come from the ground as well. Especially in colder zones the main stem can die back completely and theyll need to rely on new growth from the ground. suggest that anyone with a tree peony allow those ground shoots to open enough to tell if the foliage is from the tree Peony or the herbaceous nurse root before removing anything.

Love all the great advise! Very well put together. I bought my first Tree Peony called Bowl of Beauty? The nursery said it is 3 years old. Hope to get it planted in a few weeks. Got it sitting indoors until it warms up outside. I was thinking of planting it in a flower box built on the front of my house. Do you know if this would be okay for the plant? Its 3'5 wide box, by 13 ' long.

Thank you Laura for giving such vital info about peonies. I have a tree peoni l got as a birthday gift 15 years ago, and believe me that is the best gift l have received ever. I can hardly wait for Spring to come each year so that l can see that humongous beautiful fuchsia colour. But the only sad thing about it is the flowers last only two weeks. Is this normal?

A couple of seasons to bloom my eye. I bought three from the nursery with blooms 4 years ago. No blooms since then until this year. They come up fine every year but no blooms til this spring. I'm glad I didn't give up on them. Just know a few years may turn into 4 to 5 but once they bloom it's so worth it.

I have the herbaceous peonies and yes they say that they are deer resistant but I get deer in my yard all the time and they have eaten off the blooms in the past now I have to put up an electric fence lol but it's not set up to shock them and they haven't figgered it out yet. LOL

Can tree peonies be grown in containers? And will they grow in zone 8? I have been told that the herbaceous peonies do not grow or bloom well in Dallas, Texas simply because we do not get cold enough in the winter. Is that true? Dose any body know? S. O. S

This might be the answer to my prayers! I've always had peonies (my favorite flower, but when we moved to our current home, I can't get them to grow. :( Our soil here is very sandy, so I'm not sure if that's the problem or not.
