Salvia: A Bulletproof, Pollinator-Attracting Perennial! Garden Answer Nicole: Hi Im new to gardening and Ive got a huge long bed that ive been fixing the soil on for about a month between rain and Im a busy working mother. Ive got asiatic lilies ( orange, deep red, dark pink and yellow, salvia(dark purple) clematis (middle light strioes a pretty purplish pink, bearded iris' ( purple yellow) and a reg iris with a pretty blue color) a deeper purpleish huecherra, mini roses (white and dark deep pink)a few other things as well, but its a bare bed all along one side and then ends in the bearded iris. Im kind of wondering now that Im watching more videos of yours, if I have to many varieties. I have a huge yard so no biggie but Im curious with what Ive mentioned what else pairs good with these? Oh and Im having a hard time finding full sun plants to break up the taller plants. Ive got hosta but its a shade or part sun plant. I doubt youll even get to this long post.

The gardens and flowers you have are beautiful! I cannot have anything that is pollen producing. Between my dad, husband, children and grandchildren ( or should I say thier allergies, I cannot have anything that may add to thier breathing and asthma problems! I love watching ppl that have beautiful flowers!
I do integrate marigolds into my vegetable garden, spreading them around between the row ends and certain veggies! They attract butterflies, honey bees and keep snakes away!
I may check salvia out to see if there are any allergy producing pollens that they give off that would hinder my family. If not, I know one more I can add!
Thank You for sharing!

I love my salvias! They definitely are a hardy, easy to care for plant, and great for beginners and bees! I bought one of my first ones on clearance in the Fall years ago. I felt bad for the poor thing because it looked so bad. I said, I'll take you home and take care of you. That one plant has paid me back by having lots of babies that I have transplanted to other areas! And it is very true that deer and bunnies leave them alone, as we have both that pass through our property. The only thing I've ever had trouble with is slugs, but those are easily taken care of with a couple shakes of granule slug bait.

Last year I bought two salvias that looked just like the pale blue and pale pink. They were beautiful and tidy, like you said. I deadheaded each stem so I wouldn't have to cut any young flowers off. This year they look raggedy and bad. They have kind of separated into two plants above ground but still on one root, unfortunately. How can I get them to look good again. I cut them down in desperation hoping they would fill in but they grew back ugly again. Fertilized them twice. Do you have any pointers to make them beautiful again? Thanks.

I really enjoy your videos! You have such a beautiful property. I have a new property that has deer that passes through daily, and I chose salvia as one of my perennials in my garden. Interesting though I bought three different varieties and two of the varieties the deer ate the blooms. I was a dummy and threw away the tags and so I dont know which type they ate and which one they left alone. But the one difference is the one the left alone has a tiny leaf, where the two they ate has the larger standard leaf like the ones in your video.

I love salvia! My HOA was haven't a hard time getting anything to work in my front yard garden. Everything died. Plus, way to much ground showing. I bought a 6 Pak of salvias and they planted it along the sidewalk and it's doing FANTASTIC. People stop by and all about it. In addition to all the pollinators Laura mentioned, BUMBLEBEES and wasps also love it!
Still allergic and afraid of wasps, but I'm learning to appreciate them for all the good they do in the garden.

I saw that neat trick of unpotting the flower, putting the dirt from the hole into the pot, plant, and pour the dirt right around the new roots in the hole from the pot. You probably went through that trick in another show. Just an expert trick that I did not ever think of doing. I always put the dirt on the ground and it is not as neat or tidy. Thanks!

I planted some salvia and lavender close to each other last year in full sun. We had a wet year so the slugs really got at the salvia but did not eat the lavender. Do you recommend any products to get rid of slugs that are also non-toxic for dogs? Do I need to do something to get rid of any slug eggs that may be in that bed from last year?
