Planting Up Our Hayracks! Garden Answer seriously? : So glad to see you arent being wasteful this year. Encouraging over-planted containers only to have the vigorous growers overwhelm the average growers in the remainder of the growing season is foolish, unfair to the plant and a wasteful investment in time and mostly money. Stressing the life out of some plants by forcing them to grow in overcrowded conditions and then shooting them full of weekly fertilizer only makes matters more intense and wastes additional time and money. Underperforming plant displays by over planting isnt a good marketing strategy for PW either. PW needs to be able to showcase the merits of all the hard work that went into their plant development by allowing those plants to perform as they were meant to, to show off their unique attributes instead of fizzling out not due to the plant's failures, but because of the gardener's decisions. The right plant in the right growing conditions in the right display saves lives, plant lives. The lemon coral sedum ( and others in that planter) also misses out on the opportunity to showoff the very reason why YOU as a gardener, Laura, love their visual contribution to a planting scheme. In the end all I saw was a massive ( albeit impressive) petunia display. Forgot there were other plants in that display cuz they were choked out by the supertunias. Shouldnt have to work that hard to see the other plants. Average homeowners dont have commercial nursery sponsors to fund their planting, potting and feeding costs. Planter projects cost money. Once you make the initial $$$ investment in a large striking planter the annual planting show and upkeep should be relatively low cost BECAUSE of the amazing work of plant scientists like PW and Espoma who show YOU how a modest investment each season with the right brand, will give you the biggest bang for your bucks. I cant wait to see how this re-worked scheme will turn out this year as the hayrack idea was breathtaking in its scope in large scale thinking but can it be sustainable in the years to come? I think so!

The hay racks are going to be beautiful, and I love the complementary planting in the large estate planters. But, Laura, I couldn't take my eyes off the gorgeous shrub behind you. It looks like bridal wreath, one of my favorites. Is that what it is?
Fun to see Noe making an appearance. He seems to be right at home. Thanks! Lisa

First time I have seen your videos. That is a lot of gorgeous flowers. Can't wait to see them after they have filled out & filled in the hayracks.
I love plants. My grandfater & mother had green thumbs & could grow anything. Me, I say my thumb is black, I can't grow anything. I'll be watching.

These hayracks will look beautiful in a couple of months. Love the colors you picked and the sweet potato vines are one of my favorites. Just wish I could keep the woodchucks from eating mine. I so look forward to your videos! Can never get enough, very inspiring. Wish you would put out a couple a day!

One of your best recommendations ever! The Supertunia Vista series are gorgeous and from a video you posted years ago, I decided to add them to my garden. I recommend them to all my gardening friends and family because they are such a rewarding plant!

I just purchased five hay rack planters. I plan to do something similar this summer on our third floor balcony. When would be the best time to plant to maximize growth and time for this project. I live in Washington DC, I think we are a zone 6a.

I just don't understand, why you would not put the hayracks on the OTHER side, facing your house? I'm thinking, you would still see them from the other side, and you would then get the full enjoyment from the house and garden.

Really love seeing that you are sharing the process, sharing the lessons the garden has taught you, and so forth. I, too, love the potato vine and its strong statements in the baskets. Can't wait to see this in a month!
