Planting Elderberries in My Garden!
video description
Remember? They had the ground trenched up to remove a utility pole on their property and cut across diagonally from the middle of the west side of their house, all the way across the yard to a utility pole outside their fence (the one she's planting up to mask the pole.
Like, right in that corner where the utility pole is, where she's planted multiple trees, kniphofia and elderberries, how does she know where she shouldn't dig? Or, are the lines buried so deeply, she doesn't have to worry about it?
When they were planting the kniphofia, her shovel ran into a huge chunk of concrete and that's what started me wondering about the whole call before you dig thing. Anyway, if anyone knows, please tell me. Thanks!

This is a lovely elderberry. I make elderberry syrup all the time as a medicinal supplement for colds and flu. However, I feel I need to clarify something about the elderberry, of any kind. DO NOT EAT THE BERRIES FRESH. They will make you very ill in their fresh state. They can be used in syrups(medicinal and pancake, wine, preserves, but they must always be cooked. It really does work to ward off colds and flu and to shorten them. I have the wild North American verity and have never had any problems with animals eating them and the berries are very sour off the tree.

My main problem with you is that you have our hot summers but not our warm winters! Darn, another beautiful plant not recommended for zone 9b. I always thought it was our hot summers but I guess it's vernalization for flowering. You cover the lower zones but what about us in higher zones? I am a big PW fan and love to see them in place in your garden. Now I find myself looking for the D. Austin roses, ah really, do I need another vice?
Dog friendly is not the problem, puppies are the problem. Young ones canine or human must be watched.

Just planted the straight species elderberry for screening and attracting wildlife. I've been moving towards planting more natives than cultivars in the last few years. Not saying cultivars don't have their place, but if you want to attract more wildlife, I've noticed they definitely prefer the straight species over the cultivars. Keep in mind that the straight species of plants can get very large and may be more aggressive, so you need space for a lot of them.

I haven't seen all your videos. yet but working on it; ) I LOVE BioTone for me being the beginner planter that I am. It's been a miracle for me. I've also discovered Jack's a couple days ago which could be local to the east coast. I really enjoy all your help in making us out here, seasoned and beginner gardeners to be successful. I kill more than survive but I'm trying. You are just one of the sweetest ladies. thank you again.

True! In Slovenija Elderberry flowers are fried. Just make a batter for crapes - palacinke and dip and fry. Delicious! We do that with White Acacia flowers as well, they usually flower at the same time, in May. And we make Elderberry Flower syrup to drink during the summer. At the end of the summer we make Elderberry berry syrup.

I have a few black lace. The deer will eat them, but not as bad as roses, hostas, etc. Just wanted to mention that in the UK the make elderflower cordial and champagne and elderflower syrup (if I remember correctly Harry and Megan's cake had elderflower as one of the flavors) with them. Sounds even better than frying them

I am also obsessed with elderberries. I have just planted a black lace, and am considering the instant karma for the shady problem spot next to my doorway on the north side of the house. I know elderberries prefer sun, but do you think it would still grow in narrow shady spot with bright shade?

Im from Croatia and when I was little my grandma made elderberry juice from these flowers, and it was delicious! Im still seeing people collecting and foraging elderberry flowers near smaller roads and in woods. Maybe I should do that too: D
Btw. I love your videos! :)

I am in England and I dehydrate elderflower en mass every year and use it to make floral herbal teas, as well as in baking to make biscuits - yummy yummy! I also make elderberry wine later in the year. There is so much of this growing native in our area and we forage for it xx
