Sweet Romance Lavender Update! Garden Answer Stephanie: Do you think it's a good idea to put corn based weed block fabric around newly planted lavender grosso and future allium and Tulips? I live in Eastern Pennsylvania.
I was thinking in the end of October of laying the corn based weedblock fabric down around the 6 lavenders and cut out holes for each bulb I plan to plant behind (tall alliums) and in front (tulips) of the lavender. Then I want to lay marble rocks down on top of the weedblock fabric.
Would the weedblock be a bad idea for the lavender and allium since they like the same type of soil (I amend each hole? I've heard that weedblock is not good for soil because it doesn't allow air to circulate and it retains moisture. I know lavender doesn't like wet feet, so I'm wondering what's the right thing to do.
Thanks for your help and wondeful videos!

Lavender loves the heat, if you put it in borderline baking conditions it will thrive.
Had a lavender plant many years back which was potted. Put it on our old septic tank cover (cement slab, the thing radiated heat in the summer. Plant absolutely loved it to the point where I kept pruning it back every other month or so.
Granted I was fertilizing the plant as well, each time I pruned it the plant would act like it was stunted for a week. Always wondered if it did some damage, but after that week it would just continue intense growth.
Really loved that plant, sadly I had to move, put the plant in my car, but it wasn't a big fan at all of the new climate and slowly died (moved from Mississippi to Iowa.

Your lavender is so beautiful, I think I have the kind that grows huge, and it spreads I have found out. I think I might dig up a couple of the plants and I have a spot in my yard that it would be gorgeous there. But I really like this variety it's so compact and beautiful. I cut my lavender back every fall, I have found it just makes it look better when it grows back in the spring, especially with the harsh winters that we have here in Idaho. Thank you Laura I will be looking for this variety to add to my flower garden.

Love seeing this progress! I'll have to find some for the east side of my house! Also: I'm confused, when Laura says she has something on drip, does she mean it's in a timer? Or, in this case, the hydrangea tree is getting 4 gallons of water per hour, 24/7? That sounds like it could get expensive! I know she's on a well, so that's a different story. Just need to know if I need to give more water to my hydrangea bush, it had flowers when I brought it home, but now it's just vibrant green - no flowers.

Laura the way you have planted the lavender around the vegetable garden looks so beautiful. No matter how many Garden Answer videos I watch the beauty of this garden never ceases to amaze me. It's stunning! Sweet Romance Lavender is a plant I love more and more each summer, we have planted lots in our garden and it's our favourite, it smells gorgeous and I find it seems to attract a lot of butterflies which is always lovely

Gorgeous. Our Hidcote stayed smallish for a few years and had softer blooms, not as rich as yours. Our Dentata got quite woody after two or three years and became too big for our front path. After removing them they put out volunteers in surprising areas and we love them. We now have 'Grosso' along the front path and they are wonderful. My wife makes beautiful 'wands' out of the blossoms. Thank you!

Thanks so much Laura, I watch all of your videos and my garden is better than ever! I LOVE lavender but it never does well for me. I am going to try the sweet romance variety, you've inspired me! We live in Sacramento, CA, so our summers are very hot and similar to yours. My question is: what time of year do you cut them back? Is it fall, early spring? Thank You so much!

Hi, the hedge looks amazing. I'm looking to create an identical henge in my back garden with the sweet romance variety of lavender. Om based in the UK and have tried searching for this particular variety but have been unsuccessful, maybe it's not the season, but are they hardy enough to withstand the UK weather? Thanks and the educational videos are awesome.

I wish the garden centers in my area carried PW. They are a higher priced brand. They are totally worth the price with an incredible show and staying power. But most customers in the rural south won't spend the money on a flower garden. And the cost of PW's mail order is outrageous. I would have loved to have had a supertunia or three this Spring.

What kind of soil should lavender be grown in? My property is a bit sandy and lots of inground rocks (digging a hole for a single shrub takes a lot of effort due to rocks. I've added compost to the hole for lavender before but it never survives. I often see gravel around them as in your garden - should they be planted in more sandy soil then?
