Planting More Blackberries, Prepping Potatoes & planting Lilacs! . Garden Answer Gigi: I grew up on a farm and have planted and dug a lot of potatoes in my life, not so much lately, but on the farm. I have always been a little OCD and my grandmother used to tell me as we walked the rows planting by hand that I planted the straightest rows of taters she had ever seen, lol. Now, I plant them in grow bags which makes digging obsolete. Anyway, yes, red la soda and red norland are related. Red la soda (both actually) is an excellent new potato. Dig them smaller even than the seed potatoes you bought. Wash it and boil them, then eat with butter and hot sauce (my current favorite is cholula. Of course, new potatoes are also good boiled and served with butter and mint, too. Yummy! As for blackberries, I have tons of Himalayan blackberries I could send you and I can guarantee you they wouldn't have died, lol. They're tasty but the worst invasive plant I have ever seen, far worse than kudzu.

So when you hit that utility box and talked about the county having the right o bulldoze that bed it made me wonder are you planting all that on you county right of way? Here in my county in Florida the county right of way is for all utilities such as water, electric, natural gas, phoneline, internet lines and such. We are not allowed to plant anything on the right of way and they keep it mowed even out here in the rural area where I live. I'm so rural into the farmland of northwest Florida we share the road with huge farm tractors that go down the road 5 miles per hour.

I've grown purple majesty! They're pretty good! I think the purple color includes more vitamins or something? Either way, I grew them for the color and they were super tasty roasted along with asparagus (all cut into 1 inch pieces- even the asparagus. Really nice bite sized pieces seasoned with garlic. They were sooo pretty and tasty along with our home raised steak from our Brangus type cattle. I look forward to seeing you make some purple mashed potatoes! Would be so fun for the kids definitely green eggs and ham energy!

I've grown the purple majesty potatoes, they're SO fun to cook up & eat. The color stays when cooked so it's a fun treat to eat purple potatoes. I didn't make a potato salad with them, but that would be fun. They have good flavor & even mashed up with butter take on a lighter purple color. I think you'll enjoy them & so will your kiddos ( it'llbe interestingto see what Aaron thinks, please record a video of his reaction.

Omg I'm pausing video at 3: 06 because I sincerely believe that those raspberry bushes you are pulling out are totally viable! Raspberries sprout on their own terms! In fact I pruned mine when you did, added biotone fertilizer, we then got snow, heat, snow, and finally today I see one green leaf coming out. Oh gosh don't trash those, they are very forgiving!

For some reason it made me a bit nervous when you are talking with those hand pruners in your hand I have an unsightly area on the front of my house where the aerobic system boxes are. I just bought a huge pretty planter and got a clematis and trellis to help cover the corner. It also can easily be moved aside if we need to access it.

The potato tutorial was really helpful. As for the purple potatoes I love how you say theyre an experiment since youve not grown them or cooked with them. Thats one of the many encouragements Ive gleaned from watching your videos. Im trying new varieties, planting combinations, colors and textures because of you, Laura. Thank you!

When planting potatoes in your own garden, one should always use certified seed. Not only does it protect your own potatoe crop but it protects large farmers around you from disease that might be in potatoes. You should always know where you get your potatoes from that you are using for sets.

Your south garden shed is such a great asset! Youre going to get a lot of use and enjoyment out of it and the Hartley for years and years to come. My garden shed has seen better days and needs replaced, but our local contractors are so booked I dont know when it will happen. Eventually.
