Planting Trees: Day 1, South Garden! Garden Answer Keith: Thanks to your recommendation I just bought 3 autumn brilliance service berries. Trying to make my yard bird and pollinator friendly with mostly native plants and trees. I love the size they get, not too big, not too small. We have an ugly above ground pool that our neighbor put in the back corner of her yard with a big pool deck that she and her sister sit on and look out at my yard and house. Its currently the focal point when we sit on our patio or when I look out my kitchen window. We are in the process of getting a 10x20 shed to help block out the pool and pool deck. While wed like a fence, its not high enough to block the pool deck where they sit. My lot is only. 33 acres and we are in zone 5b here in Upstate New York. We are hoping the shed positioned with the 20 length with a service berry on either end will give us 30 feet of privacy. The service berries were $120 each and are already about 7 feet tall and 3 feet wide. The shed will be about 20 feet from the back of the property line. In the back 20 (75 feet wide) feet from left to right I have a small white pine I planted last spring (in the corner to block the pool deck when it grows) with two red twig dogwood in front of it, then 5 green giant arborvitae, and then 3 Norway spruce with 2 multi stem river birch in front of them. Im hoping with all of the layering it will give privacy and a nice view from my patio and kitchen window. We also planted about 30 Dark American arborvitae on the left side of the property line leaving a gap for the white pine in the back left corner. I think my neighbors think Im crazy, but I want my backyard and especially patio to be my private oasis. We are also planning to add a privacy fence along the right side of the backyard down the road. Thanks for all of the inspiration you give.

Laura, I have a 60 yr old Boxwood. I have noticed, a portion of it, has died. 2 years ago, it looked to have had maybe the elder bug. Black bug with orange strips on wings. Well yesterday, I separated the branches. And the trunk is rotted and looks like something has been eating it. Mom broke off the portion of trunk and little tiny flying bugs with orange bodies was flying. Clear wings. orange bodies. I am in NC (piedmont area, near foothills) and in 7b. Do you have an idea of what it may be and how I can treat it? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks. PS, I am afraid it may be termites. not sure.

It's just amazing to me how you look so beautiful after hours of working so hard planting trees! I'm waiting to hear someone in the filming crew shout, Laura, you're needed in makeup! before you wrap up your projects and get back on the camera to walk us through everything at the end! In TN's humidity, I'm a sweaty mess just walking to our mailbox!
Also, care to share where you got your hoodie? Love it!

I live in zone 6b Southwest corner of Missouri. I have planted 2 Atlas Cedars and they did not make it, I struggled with them for 3years and they both finally died this year. Funny it was at the same time. I love the looks of them, so if you have any good ideas on how to care for them I would love to know. Thank you for all the knowledge that you both give.

When I think back to what that section of the property looked like when you first purchased it, the difference is astronomical!
That Vanderwolfs pine is so lush and lovely. I wonder will the wind blowing from larger side have an impact on its growth habit and let the other side catch up?

Putting Benjamin in the hole I was like. Yeah, he is used to measure if the hole is deep and big enough: D
I was waiting for this video since the sneak peek on IG! Looks so good and gives me some inspiration to plant some more big trees (just need to convince the BF, haha)

Just wow! I bet you felt great getting all that done in one day. The willows maybe put them in that back border you are creating? Then they can be let to get full size. also I would go ahead and shape that one vander pine, Ik that would bug me every time I walk by

It's really coming together out there (Benjamin nope-ing away from the auger was cute, and I would absolutely be hiring that landscape company myself if I lived nearby. So much to fun watch as y'all spruce up the south garden! rimshot
I'll see myself out.

Im wondering how youre keeping your fruit tree blossoms from freezing these cold nights? We are renting a large heater as well as spraying the trees with KDL, a product I just found out about from a horticulturist friend.

Its all coming together nicely, hiccups and all. Way to maintain a positive attitude! Towards the end of the video there were loads of PW plants. Do you get them for free or do you have to buy them like the rest of us?
