3 Things I do with Annuals Grasses at the End of the Season! Garden Answer Ger: I usually cut mine down at the end of winter, and sometimes I will also put plastic sheathing over the ball to make it emerge faster in the spring. Even with the plant dead in the winter time, it still has a marvelous winflo factor to it, and if it's windy enough it does radiate unique sound. My opinion the plant has many uses besides just being an ornamental plant in the garden. I think if you cut it down to the soil and either put plastic over the football or put it a lot of mulching, I think you'll get some of the roots to come back in the early spring you will not have to replant. Many homeowners associations are not happy with these grasses, with all the wildfires we've had in the past, they feel that these grasses could spread Sparks.

That dried grass/hydrangea arrangement is beautiful! When she mentioned fixative it took me back to when I used to use that spray on pastel chalk artwork. There is workable fixative which is just like it sounds, where you can keep nice what you have done but still add to it and the permanent kind which more or less seals the work. It's been years, but I think there are even gloss and matte permanent fixatives also. They are like hairspray, but sometimes hairspray will yellow; not a big deal if you're not going to keep the dried arrangement for a long time.

Could it be you are the perfect person? :) OK, to be less dramatic. you embody everything I admire: your love of plants, animals and respect for the environment as well. Not to mention, an incredible talent for decoration. You speak well, and you have an awesome smile. Any hey, those 2 ginger cats, Russell and Cheddar! Maybe one day No will join in, one of our rescues took a long long time to even approach - but sometimes you just have to let them be. Carry on and Keep Gardening! :) And last but not least, the sweetest little one Benjamin!

Hi Laura and Aaron! What great ideas for the different grasses! I love the dried arrangement with the hydrangeas, so pretty! I want to try the Prairie Winds Blue Paradise grass in two of my outdoor pots next year and hope they do well. I'm in Zone 7a, so fingers crossed! I used to plant the Purple Fountain Grass every year, but with their root system, it was getting difficult digging them out every year with arthritis getting worse in both hands. I left them in the pots until Spring. Thank you so much for sharing!

I use hydrangea in most of my flower arrangements. Mine are the limelight variety like you used in your arrangement. I have used spray paint on my limelights immediately after cutting them. The spray paint adds color and keeps the florets open. I use clear spray for a more natural arrangement. Some of my arrangements are 4-5 years old. I love your arrangement and you have inspired me once again to get busy and create my fall front porch!

Just one more reason to grow more grasses. That arrangement was stunning. So, I'm wondering why you dig up the root balls of the grasses rather than allowing them to deteriorate into the soil. Also wondering what you do with the root balls once they're dug up. Compost pile? Do you have a compost pile? So many questions - sorry! Lisa

The arrangement looks lovely. A fixative is used by artists to stop a pencil or charcol drawing from smudging once you're done working on it. I have often heard that hairspray and fixatives are interchangable, so I suspect that product will do what you want it to. :)

Hi. What is the name of the grass you cut for the planter? Is it an annual or perennial? So glad I found your videos, they're fun, informative & pretty relatable for this North Idaho girl! FYI - love seeing your Benjamin. I have my own, only he's 6'2 now and all grown up

I have the purple fountain grass in pots on my front porch. I'm just going to leave it there. I've never grown it before this year and I love it. I really liked the way your grass looked with the winter frost. So. that is the goal here. Planting more next year!

Geesh! Too much work from grass that slices and dices you you should have put a face mask a faces Shield on or some kind of face mask so your face doesn't get all sliced up. Love the smaller arrangement with the hydrangea
