Harvesting Parsnips for the First Time! Garden Answer Veronica: Excellent harvest, kiddo! Just a quick tip. Parsnips germinate best in the dark, as I found out from another gardener while attempting my third trial. He said to cover with a plank of wood after sowing, which I did, but I found that once the seedlings came up they hit the plank and would then struggle. So I adjusted the plank by placing spacers underneath at both ends, allowing more room to grow but still keeping them in the dark. When I could see the were big enough, I removed the plank and grew them on as normal. Through this advice I finally got my first crop of parsnips. That and fresh seed is a must. Enjoy your bounty!

One of the wonderful things about these root vegetables is that after you clean them up just cut them up to bite-sized pieces either peel them and cut them up to bite-sized pieces and freeze them for future meals! It's just me and my mom here but we're trying to be self-sustainable and flying to eat more vegetables and fruits from what we can grow in our own backyard instead of relying in the grocery store when it comes to harvesting vegetables and fruits so that is one thing you could always think about is leaving yourself a good portion of the freezer for fresh vegetables for future meals

Happy for your harvest. Your excitement was just to cute. I feel your happiness Why cause I have a container and I threw some bell peppers into next to my cayenne pepper plants and behold the other day along with my peppers I saw a nice bell pepper. I knew that plant looked diffrent. told my daughter I think my bell pepper seeds took. we both laughed when I sent her a picture. Good job. and enjoy your parsnips. I caint believe either you guys don't like soups espcially in the cold crispy days. But it's ok. not everyone has the same tadte buds.

What would you recommend using to bring nutrients to a new flower bed? Or recommend ph levels. And just your overall experience with that. I planted pumpkins back at the end of June or beginning of July (mom brain) and they did horrific, aphids took over and I couldnt seem to keep on top of them no matter how hard I tried. I had such a huge area overgrown by the beautiful foliage but the 6-7 plants only produced 3 pumpkins! Im thinking it was either the soil, aphids or pollination. Or all

Please start making soup with all the wonderful produce you have! Saute chopped onion, garlic, in butter until soft. Add celery and carrots and stir in. Add whatever other veggies you have and a bouquet garnis of herbs. Fill pot with water or stock. Add a little wine if you like. Simmer for an hour with rice, noodles or potatoes if you want. Also, its a great way to use up those less than beautiful specimens. Filled Mason jars can be canned or frozen. Quick, easy and nutritious.

I love the relationship you have with your pet chickens. Really cute. What will you do differently to winterize for them? just curious. little beds and blankets. (kidding) we used to let our parsnips winter over so that the hard cold sweetened their flavor. I live in PA. I'm sure things are different all over. BTW: my grandson always stops to watch you and Ben. Luke is 12 months.

Ohhh, that was amazing! My goodness, must be so so satisfying to grow food. I've mostly had an ornamental garden -- not much full sun in a small yard and made flowers a priority. But your veggie videos REALLY make me want to find room to grow some. Oh, also, lots of those parsnips grew deeper than the raised bed, didn't they! Amazing, just amazing.

Wow what a harvest! Couldn't you have just brushed off the dirt and stored some in the root cellar? Maybe I'm just showing my age - I grew up on a farm and we stored all sorts of root begs in the caller we had that had been dug into the of a hill. (A very scary room to us little kids. The only light was from the door way. creepy)

It's so much fun to see you get excited over your parsnips! I feel the same way about my tomatoes this year and sometimes others just don't understand how amazing being able to grow your own food can be. Thanks for your videos and especially your infectiously positive attitude toward growing things.
