Planting Shade Loving Perennials! Garden Answer Nicole: You have lots of mature trees, but never seem to have trouble locating your plants exactly where you want to put them. I end up digging multiple holes to avoid the roots, and my plant doesnt end up where I really wanted it to go. Do you have a magic way to avoid roots, or do you just chop them out of the hole and hope it doesnt hurt the tree?
Also, what do you fertilize the plants with during the season, so it doesnt leave a mess on top of the mulch? Thank you!

I love this! I have a shady area that I need to fill and almost every summer I plant some smaller heuchera in the area and every spring they don't come back. I see one that made it this year. Any ideas what's going on? We're in zone 6a. The area has pretty heavy soil that doesn't always drain great. I'm wondering if it stays too wet there and how you would go about fixing that? I really want to be able to plant these beautiful plants!

Too funny; I just heard about the Crested Surf on 'Lets Argue About Plants' (Fine Gardening) podcast. And, now here you are planting it. Guess this is a push from the Garden fairies that I must plant a Crested Surf. Regarding Heuchera, here in southern NH (zone 5, I cannot get heucheras to survive more than 2 years. Every winter they 'frost heave? '. By the 3rd spring, they're dead. What am I doing wrong?

It was so much fun watching this video this morning, especially since we received a sprinkling of snow, yes snow, here in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The ground is still frozen, but there are signs here and there of Spring. I notice, in beds which are in full sun, signs of plants breaking their dormancy. Love watching your videos. You do a great job! Stay safe, and Ill see you in the next video: )

What plants would you suggest for a completely new garden (south-west direction, where there are no plants in yet? I would love to have a lush garden that are especially winterhard, but I find it so hard to commit. And I see you videos and you plant and plant so many beautiful flowers and plants. I am just scared of doing it wrong. Thanks so much, any advice is super welcome.

I've watched so many of your videos & find them so enjoyable & educational! Like your tip of where to place the emitter (behind the root ball of the heuchera) on that slope near your new walkway. Would you ever consider or recommend using the soil moist water absorbing crystals especially on a slope? Or is it a waste of money? Just wondering what your opinion is.

is there an additive you would suggest for clay soil? I have a full shade flower bed that never gets all the way dry despite our high temps. and I think its killing my hydragena: ( How can I improve the soil so its well draining and doesn't stay wet? We don't have any drip going to that area. we are in zone 8b.

When you tell us about a specific kind of plant from PW am I going to be able to find it at local nurseries grown by anyone else? For instance, the color blaze coleus. I cant find a lot of PW in my area and cant afford to order them. Is it likely that I will see them from anyone other than PW?
