I live in Michigan where we got the bizarre freezing temps. Last Sunday my husband got caught in a quick snow/hail storm while he was cutting the grass. That was weird. It was a half mile wide storm cloud that floated by with blue skies behind it. I didn't have any trouble with my perennials. One plant, a butterfly flower turned bright lime green from the cold and frost but it's beginning to push darker leaves. We usually don't plant annuals until Memorial Day or sometimes I take a chance by planting this weekend, but this year I'll wait. I saw one house planted all their flowers two weeks ago and I bet everything is dead now.

As I watched this video and saw the beautiful border behind you, I thought of this: : You must feel very proud and have a big sense of accomplishment when you walk around your property and see all that you and Aaron have created. Your IG posts and stories tell me that you really do get to pause now and then and enjoy the beauty that you have built there in eastern OR. You're a real treasure, Laura & Aaron - an inspiration to many (including me. I wish you continued success and the drive to keep Garden Answer going for many years to come!

Your comment about not being able to grow impatiens struck a cord with me. If I understand correctly, your soil is somewhat alkaline and impatiens thrive in soil with a pH of between 6. 0 and 6. 5. This may be your issue. Mine here in NE Tennessee is similar but opposite. I really want to grow delphinium but it requires an alkaline soil and mine is acidic. I have raised them in my greenhouse to a transplant sized and have read that adding wood ash can raise pH. It all is such an experiment! So, hope this helps!

Love your vids! Just confused why you don't have a compost pile and buy plastic bags of compost all the time? You have plenty of organic matter in your soil, plus chicken manure would make for a perfect soil! You would also leave less waste from buying plastic bags and incorporate your food waste into compost. Just think it's such a waste! Also, when mulching your veggie garden you will know exactly what's in your compost, don't be fooled with brands, they put anything in their bags just to bulk them out!

We are in north central South Dakota and we have had several freezing nights. We had bought fruit trees but did not plant them. I also had veggies, flowers, and a GreenStalk tower that I have already planted up! We did not put anything out until today! We have worked all day in wind. Not finished yet but glad we waited. I covered up my hydrangea every night! Ready for spring! Our Runnings store had very little Proven Winner plants this year. We went pretty quickly but they did not seem to have much.

It's really funny you said you have trouble with impatients. because that is the one plant I have the best luck with, wish it wasn't an annual, I always buy a lot of them. But since I've been watching you, last summer I bought the supertunias and the super bells and I LOVE them.
Thanks for all your videos I love watching them and look forward to them. I really appreciate you and Aaron and also Benjamin and of course the kitty cats. Thanks again.

Laura, you are so gracious and sweet. I can't believe how rude some of these questions were! Just know there are a lot of us who love and appreciate what you are doing! We all have different tastes and priorities in our gardens, so it's natural some people not love every aspect of every project in others' gardens. Thank you for all you do. My garden is so much happier, healthier, and more enjoyable because of you!

Here in East Tennessee a lot of people lost gardens put out Our zone said all clear in late April - May 5th, and yet we were down in the 30s up until last night. It was incredibly unusual and a real shock to many. Big gardeners lost veggies and a load of folks lost annuals already put out. New rule for me: never again will I put seedlings or plants out unto after Mothers Day. Lesson learned.
