Planting Some Hibiscus for a Friend! Garden Answer Anna: My dad grew up in So Cal in the 50s and 60s and has fond memories of the big beautiful hibiscus in his yard. My parents have lived in Nor Cal out in the country my whole life and Dad wouldnt trade it for anything (he has a beautiful large hillside yard to work in, but its too cool and shady for any tropical plants or even citrus. They recently got a second home closer to me in So Cal, and he is excited to grow things in the yards there. The FIRST thing he said was how much he wants a hibiscus! It would be really fun to grow one well suited to making agua frescas (jamaica) or tea. But I also LOVE the double-bloomed ones, especially the blue one you have, Laura! Maybe small Hibiscus in pots lining the drive would be nice. We are going to try to incorporate a lot of CA natives and I am unsure of how to design in harmony with both those and the tropical plants that are so popular here (palms, plumeria, bird of paradise, bougainvillea, split-leaf philodendron, and citrus are very common in residential gardens alongside the trees and hedges popular all over the US.

My grandma used to grow beautiful hibiscus, you could see the blooms from the road. She liked red, I liked the white ones. One of my uncles just to say the blooms were the size of dinner plates. It is amazing that they completely die back in winter then shoot up to bushes that get larger every year. Major issue in NC was Japanese Beatles, for that reason, I do not grow them, nor do I grow roses. I moved in 2017 and this property has three what grandma used to call old timey cane roses. I left them and they are pretty neat they take care of themselves and they are pretty much done blooming in June before the Japanese Beatles show up.

I live in central Texas and it gets pretty hot in the summer, but I noticed you said something about it being 104 where you are. But I also saw where you put in drip irrigation. Did you put in drip irrigation because of the high temperature or because it is a young plant? I put these plants in the ground yesterday and I mist each plant mid-day for 20 seconds. I just thought that because the plant wasnt very mature, that the misting would help with the heat. Am I hurting more than helping?

In So California (10b) we can grow Hibiscus but we have a terrible time with white fly. The ones we grow here must be a different variety than yours, the leaves not so dark but biig beautiful flowers. About the time the flowers bloom, this white cob webby stuff filled with the tiniest white flies hanging from the back side of the leaves. It's so ugly and getting rid of it is so difficult - I gave up and pulled mine out after several years of battling it.

Those hibiscus look glorious! I have some planted at the front of my house but they don't stay nice all summer. They will flush out in late spring and flower but once they're done flowering their leaf will start to slowly turn light green to brown and they will not flower again. Do you who what could be the issue? They get full sun, last year I gave them more water but got the same results. Thank you for your continuous garden inspiration!

I have about 35 bushes of 6 different sorts of hardy hibiscus. I live in Switzerland in Europe and I cant find a completely white hibiscus for sale here. Last year I bought some seeds online from a seller in Canada and not one germinated. Do you or any one on this site have a Snow White or blue river 2 seeds I can buy. Or know someone who has good quality seeds or a root clump that I can buy. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Help! Four of my hardy hibiscus planted last summer are losing lower leaves after turning yellow and getting holes in the leaves. Still flowers at the top but lost lots of leaves! Zone 7a; south side of the house, 5 feet away from in ground pool, bed covered in 3-inch rocks, 6-8 hours of sun. Have spray head irrigation. Just added holly tone around base. Too little water? Too much? Fungus? Insects? Any ideas would be appreciated.

I have 4 hardy hibiscuses at my house and will be looking to get 2 more. For some reason none of the nurserys around me have the red ones so those are the two Im missing lol. Anyway my two head over heels (one blush and one passion) just have one bud left, so Im assuming theyre gonna start growing new foliage and buds now? Im not sure how these work but Im trying to learn cuz theyre easily my favorite flower lol

Hi love your gardening video. I live in Southern California. Zone 9b. Is there any outdoors flowers that youd recommend besides hibiscus? Plenty of full sun pretty much everyday but the issue is the temperature where I live. it can get above 90f in dry summer and some nights it drops 45-50f for a few days. What flowers would you suggest us to get for outdoors? Thank you so much.
