If you don't eat your houseplants: Bayer (now called BioAdvanced) makes a Tree & Shrub Protect and Feed synthetic chemical that can be used on houseplants. It is 100% affective, been using it for several years now to keep all of my houseplants free from ANY bugs. All potting soil I ever buy is full of pest eggs that will hatch eventually, it's unavoidable. I also use the same chemical on my River Birch outside because we are in Idaho and Oregon winds carry a pest bug (April and again October) that'll devastate your tree. For indoor plants use 1 teaspoon in 1 gallon of water and deep soak the soil in the pot the plant is sitting in. Use it away from any food crop, fish ponds, rivers, creeks and drinking wells, the plant/fruit will be toxic to eat for up to 4 years. Sounds harsh, but I don't eat my River Birch, or my houseplants.

I grow delicate ferns staghorns and water lilies, I live in a tropical environment in northern Australia so mealybugs can be problematic and non chemical solutions are the best, so with mealy bugs and aphids I carefully blast them off with a medium to soft pressure hose, every few days I recheck and blast again and again until the breeding cycle is destroyed. Ferns are too delicate for oils, alcohols, fertilisers or sprays and cannot be disturbed from the soil. So thorough water washing until the infestation is gone is pretty much the only way to get rid of them for us without damaging the plants themselves. I also observed that if you put the plants own dead leaves and branches and clippings around the base of the it the bugs are less likely to migrate to it. So theres a cool hint for you: D

I have fought mealy bug so often here in Florida (moved here from PA four years ago); it is a losing battle and so work intensive. I had a gorgeous Black & Blue Salvia that the Hummingbirds loved. I started to see the Mealy Bug; I treated with Neem Oil, mild dish soap in the correct ratio to water. One morning when I came out to check the plant (done daily); the plant was white, covered in Mealy Bug and from the long struggle, looked like it was almost finished. I pulled the plant and immediately treated the soil; I planted a different plant the next year. The other thing I am struggling with is Scale Bugs. I have had flower gardens my whole life and I have never dealt with this much of a problem with bugs. They love the warm, moist climate; no doubt about it.

I want to take a moment to once again praise your ability to provide accurate, complete information on almost any plant topic. Your videos are my ho to for any garden situation. Today, 3/30/22, I have discovered mealy bugs on my Bush Daisies. They weren't there on Sunday but they are there today, Wednesday. So I quickly punched up Garden Answer for mealy bugs. Although your video focused on indoor, your inclusion of outdoor plants assured me, the treatment works for both. I have watched you for over 5 years now, watched you grow in confidence, expertise, and presentation. And you have it girl. take a bow and be proud! Thank you and my best to you, Aaron and the babes. Ginny, Paradise California zone 7-9

Hi Laura! Help please! I randomly happened upon some PW Sweet Romance lavender (rare for me to find here in Okla, so I grabbed a few. I planted them in a small, S/SW facing bed that I only amended with some compost this year. Watered them in good when I first planted and a few days after, then backed off. They died within 2 weeks! Super bummed. I want a hedge like yours! :) Do you think the soul was too rich or did I mess up the watering? Suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

Did u check ur furniture and windows too. I was so badly infested, I actually had to throughly clean the whole room, I threw out the badly damaged plant. I washed all the other plants and treated them with insecticides. Transplanted them, threw out the old soil. Baked all my other soil. Its been a year now, I'm still trying to get control of the buggers. But I'm not giving up. They will not get the better of me.

Good job, Laura! I learned a lot from your demo. Only have four houseplants and think one gets either mealy bug or white fly. I usually just spray it off with water outside, but they eventually return. I will use your advice. BTW i use both kitchen and deep sink l Iike you do. I have septic, and my plumbing is fine. I keep all but the finest particles contained from going down drain. Thanks!

I am looking for content that addresses whether mealy bugs, (or any house plant bug) can survive off the plant. Did you feel you needed to sanitize your sun room, for example? Or if you dedicate one location for each plant for monitoring after the cleanse, is there a chance a bug can hang out on a table or in fabrics, books etc once the plant is removed and wait for a plant to come near by?
