New Shrubs for 2021! (Part 1) Garden Answer Celeste: Replacing boxwood due to fungus. I am considering using the hydrangeas as a low hedge near a walkway that would edge a cottage style perennial garden. I would select the 24 x 36 variety. How would this perform in this setting? It has 8 hrs. of sun and late afternoon shade. They would be in a north eastern exposure in Illinois. Thoughts? I have Alice Limelight nearby and it is performing well. Also, have you ever tried Tree Peonies as a hedge? Just a thought as herbaceous peonies look nice along foundations. Thanks for your response. Love your work. BEAUTIFUL AND INSPIRING!

Hi, Laura! Enjoyed this information, looking forward to the other segments to follow and adding new interest & color to my cottage yard.
Could you recommend a shrub for the front of my property behind the drainage ditch (about 6'-8' back: road, 2' to ditch, 6'-8' to shrubs, deer resistant, that would make a good 'fence' screen that both blooms (any season, and has leaves all year for yard privacy in zone 7? There are 3 12-18' eastern red cedars there now that need to come out; however, I don't know what shrubs (over 4' fully grown) to replace them with.

Im struggling to find a colorful or flowering shrub that will fill in our front flowerbed. That spot only gets sun for first 3-4 hrs on one side in the dead of summer before theyre in the shade the rest of the day. What Ive tried so far thrives on the sun side but the other side is bare. I think its a Golden Triumph boxwood from Monrovia and a Chinese fringed-flower. Local nurseries havent been much help for suggestions. Im a zone 8, in east Georgia. heavy red clay and deer everywhere. If anyone has suggestions, Id be most appreciative.

Barberry and I go waaay back to well. last summer. Not friends, barberry and me. Beautiful plant, but the needle-like spikes! Offered to take them down for my landlord since the water meter checker guy said he couldn't get to the meter. Let me just say, this is the kind of yardwork you do wearing a full suit of armor! Also, be sure you get ever single little twig off your lawn, because there ain't nothin like finding a thorn with your bare feet. YIKES!

Laura, Thank you for this video. My husband and I watched this. We have chosen the fire lite tibbit Hydrangea for our landscape. We have several in one area and love them but we needed a smaller growing one. Your are amazing with so much knowledge. I know this video is old but thats ok. I live in Michigan and was also surprised on how much science goes into testing and growing. Thank you for this.

I am new to the garden world and really excited about it all, my only concern is pet safe plants because I do have cats and dogs. Could you do a video and tell me of a website that has all the plants that are safe for animals. I keep finding ones I love and then they end up being toxic

You know folks, there are native species that belong in the US that are close relatives or at least visually similar of virtually every plant she is showing, and make FAR better choices to support our birds and butterflies, most of which cannot use any of these exotics.

Are the Paraplu Hibiscus self seeding? I currently have rose of Sharon and they are extremely hard to keep under control, but I also have hibiscus plants that do not self seed. Can't wait to check this out all of the beautiful new plants this year!
