Dividing Dahlias! Garden Answer RubySnowDrop: Last year was my first year growing Dahlias and wintering them over. I put them in cardboard boxes [with holes] with wood shavings [very messy]. I only checked on them once because I over filled the boxes and it was too messy and difficult to check on every single tuber. As a result I lost 4 but the others survived so I divided them up [got 25].
Its also too cold at nights here in Ontario until this weekend [fingers crossed] so I potted up all the surviving tubers into old pots from last year with some slightly moistened triple mix soil and put them by a south facing window back in late april. Over half of them are 3-8 inches tall already. Looks like Im ahead of the game this year. Im very excited!
Thank you so much for the videos, they have been a big help on my gardening journey this past year!

Everything I've done with my dahlia tubers has been wrong so it will be a miracle if any have survived the Winter. I stored them in a basket in the greenhouse then early Spring put them in buckets of soil outside. They're cold, wet & nothing happening. I'm going to dig them out, wash them off, divide & plant them again in some nice compost outside to get going if possible. At least now I know how to store them properly for next Winter time. If these ones are dead I'll buy some fresh ones & begin again, now I know how to do it thanks to this video.

That would do me in. I don't know how you do everything you do. It is like I put in our new irrigation system in the 25' of garden space we have. I done me in. Between doing three rows in a 12' sections longways then placing the overhead spouts in their places. I was stiff before I finished the drip system on the porch. It took me 7 hrs to get it all done. I don't know how Laura does it all the way she does. I wish I had half the energy to get things done the way she does. I think she bottles it up from Benjamin and uses it. LoL!

I adore watching you do this, I wish I had the dedication to do so!
I have decided this year my dahlias are going in the ground and I won't be lifting them but heavy HEAVY mulching after first frost. ( Hahha it's second year of Dahlias lol)
I honestly would love to have time to lift and store, but I know I won't. I will be next year getting a few more expensive tubers that will be lift but in boarders honestly I'd rather spend my time enjoying the garden when I won't do it well or on time.

Because of you I'm going to attempt to run drip irrigation (FL 9a) so thanks. I have many landscape shrubs like dwarf viburnam, dwarf lorapedulum, azaleas etc which need water maybe once a week and mixed all thru that same bed are annuals like impatience, caladiums, begonias, coleous and some containers which need water everyday. Any suggestions on how to set drip irrigation up in mixed beds, including setting timer? Thank you Cheri

I just fell down the Dahlia rabbit hole, buying way too many, if there's such a thing. When they got here I potted them up so I may have earlier blooms. Now seeing you plant yours 4 - 6 deep makes me wonder how to plant mine. I didn't plant them deep in their holdover pot, some are maybe 4 tall with nice leaves. Do I plant them deep even tho they have leaves, or just plant them the depth they are in the pot for this yr.

When you say 4 to 6 inches does that mean the bottom of the tuber goes that deep, or does it mean the top needs to be covered by 4 to 6 inches of soil? I never understand that, and always wonder if I'm doing things right. Hi, BTW, I love your videos. And especially love the way you let Benjamin do so many things on his own. And the cats coming in and out always make me laugh. You have the friendliest cats.

This is a really amazing process to me. I've never planted tubers as I've always lived in really hot climates and never thought the plants did well. I've had several die here in Southern CA. But I do have one that survived and comes back faithfully tevery year, It grows about 6' tall and 3'wide with dinner plate yellow blooms. But it may be lonely. I keep saying I need to get more dahlias!

So many questions for a beginner Dahlia grower. Your tubers are huge, is that to be expected when one buys, or over so many years? If not, should I expect 1 tuber, and when do I get many (to separate/ divide? They seem like they are pricey in the beginning, but if they continue to multiply (and I divide) seems like a good investment! PS ya'll are the best!

I planted dahlia tubers for the first time this year and Im not sure if theyre growing right. if that makes sense. theyve been in the ground for 6 wks (I live in central FL. and some havent grown at all and some maybe a 1/2 and some a couple of inches. Wondered if Ive done something wrong.
