Weeding the New Grass & Planting Dogwoods and Ornamental Grass!
video description
I didn't get a close look at what you call button weed, but I think that's mallow which is edible as well. It's pretty mild. You can toss the small tender leaves into your salad as well as the purslane, or let it go to seed and make old fashioned medicinal (not sweet) marshmallow by boiling it down till it gets gummy and then dehydrating on sheets of parchment. It's good for upset tummies. The purslane has a ton of Omega 3 (more than salmon) and tastes lemony. I like to munch on it while I'm out gardening.

I was thinking puncturevine sounded very familiar. We call them Caltrop or 3 corner jacks where I live here in Australia - Ive had plenty of them in my feet since childhood!
I love weeding. Ill get my knee pad out, gloves and tools and set to it. I zen out, my thoughts just filter absently around, the smell of dirt, flowers, and weeds as they sometimes break, the breeze, birds, bugs, distant sounds of traffic or music and voices, the coolness or the earth Im digging inits all very calming.

So I took inspiration after watching this so many times to go out and weed my yard which I'll admit has been a pretty daunting task since I've put it aside for some time. When I tell you 7 kangaroo pop up bags full. my entire body is so sore I feel like I've run a marathon. Laura you make gardening look so easy! There is nothing more rewarding than standing back and seeing all the hard work. and then more weeds! much love and appreciation

Hey laura! U really have a beautiful garden. weeded too.
Question: do u get nutsedge as weed too in ur garden. i always pull the out with there roots with its seed but they never stop coming! We don't get lawn weed / dead weed brew here in India. any advice? Also won't u walking on newly seeded grass supress other grass seeds from germination?

Grass is water hogging and having a huge grass lawn is bourgeoisie. I am sad this garden influencer is not addressing the drought issue in the west and climate change and environmental harm of everyone feeding and watering their piece of lawn. Gardening Stars have an even greater social responsibilities they should not ignore.

Question. what do you do with the puncture vine after you have pulled it up? You obviously dont compost it. do you burn it? What can you do to completely destroy those horrid seeds! Your work ethic is a rare thing and I love the story about your chores growing up. I think our society has lost that tradition with our youth.

Sometimes i think the simplest of jobs, like pulling weeds out of grass (we reseeded front lawn last fall after a construction project) are one of the most satisfying. I love how the beds along the walkways are coming together, giving me so many ideas! At my age, i'm looking for low maintenance, more and more.

We have puncture vine too in the desert Southwest zone 8, as well as a grass that sets similar thorns. (We call them all espinas in our area) I had never encountered such a thing until I moved herenasty little demon-plants! But we have been consistent with pulling them and our yard is so much better now.

You are so inspiring! I went out and dig up some dandelions in a spot where we lost some grass over winter and then spread some compost and grass seed. Im a former farm girl and learned how to work, too! Im 74 and still like to work outdoors in our yard and garden and listen to nature and dream and plan!

I despise puncture vines. We just call them goat head plants. I didnt know the name. They get dragged into the house constantly and we can always find a nice pile of red ants near them. Very satisfying watching you pull them all out. Im happy ours puncture vines do not get that big here.
