Dealing with Fungus Gnats, Planting Corn & Beans, & Jalapeo Basil Chicken Stir Fry! MsAlexmarie7: Last fall we bought potting soil on sale. A couple months ago i brought a bag in to repot my houseplants. When i opened the bag those gnats came out. I left it open thinking it would air out. Ive never dealt with these gnats before. It didnt help. I live in Wisconsin and I figured the freezing cold would help, so i set the bag outside for a couple weeks. I brought it in recently and opened the bag for a week or so. No flies! I have now repotted several plants and still havent seen any flies. Hopefully freezing the dirt like that helped. Its been a couple weeks since i repotted with the treated soil.

Benjamin is so adorable. His double take on the smell of the hyacinth, Oh this purple one is goood. I love watching you and your family. You bring back so many memories of my childhood prepping, planting and working the garden with my papa. I never realized when I was that young I was learning things that would last a lifetime. Now I am so blessed to get my grandson to help me plant our small garden every year. He gets so excited to gather the fruits of our labor. Especially his favorites, cucumbers and watermelons. Thank you for sharing your family with us. You all make make my heart smile

Loved this video for many reasons! One being a battle with fungus gnats since the end of last summer! Watching you plant the seeds was so fun! He sounds so grown up these days! Thought for sure he was going to tell you he was a beans kind of kid! Too cute, always love your conversations together! The recipe also looks yummy and I plan to check out Half baked harvest to get more fresh herb and veggie recipes! The taste test topped it off for me! Samantha Grace signing for more couldnt have been more perfect! Thank you for another great GA video!

I currently live with my parents, my mom is very ocd about a tidy and clean home but her love of spider plants has resulted in fungus knats everywhere this winter. All her plants had babies last year (and the babies had babies etc) and they spent a summer outside which shes never done. All of these smaller plants were brought inside in the fall and these little soil smelling flies are everywhere. When you kill one its smells just like dirt. Im constantly swatting them out of my nose! So many spider plants, so many Knats!

I like the half baked harvest recipes as well! I also love recipes by Once Upon A Chef! The recipes are so good, and easy to follow. Jenn Segal (the author) has a blog and has two cookbooks. I recently went back through my favorite recipes and most of them were from Once Upon a Chef. She has so many tips and ideas for the family cook! And for Laura, Jenn Segal loves loves loves spice- so some of her recipes may just be the Cat's Meow for you!

I've had a lot of experience with gnats. The best thing is not to let them get out of control from the start, by putting one sticky trap in each pot, whether you see gnats or not. Secondly, let your plants dry out, this really helps with the larvae. That's what the garden center do. If you jump on this immediately, and you will probably have gnats with propagation, you will be able to control gnats. Or at least keep them at a bare minimum.

What timing! Im a sprouting gardener and just discovered what I thought could be fungus gnats on my basil. I wasnt sure if thats what they looked like and definitely didnt know how to get rid of them. Thanks to you, Im sure thats what I have, and my sticky traps and mosquito bits will be here tomorrow! Thank you for the recipe suggestion too, my husband and I are making next weeks menu plan right now!

Benjamin is a blast to see enjoy the gardening experience. And Samantha Grace, it was precious to see her tasting a new taste and wanting more! Thank you for sharing that with us. I also have started to see fungus gnats. I am going to try your Mosquito bit method, but instead of nylons, my local Sherwin-Williams paint store sells 1 gallon paint strainer bags. These can be reused to soak the bits.

When I watched this I wondered why you didn't use a powdered form of Bt like we use for dusting veggie garden things. Turns out there are different kinds of Bt! The only one that works on fungus gnats, is the Bti, bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, instead of the plain Bt. This subspecies israelensis is also the one that works on mosquitoes. This is also the ingredient in mosquito dunks.

Im thinking about starting some seeds in my raised beds but putting row covers on them to try to get an earlier producing plant. Im in zone 4B-5A and would love to start sunflowers and zinnias earlier outdoors. I normally wouldnt dare plant frost tender seeds outside until mid-May but wondered if I could get away with it if I used a cover of some kind.
