Flower Bed Cleanup Around the Chicken Coop!
video description
As the temperatures continue to increase, please resist cleaning up your gardens for a little while longer. We want to wait until daytime temperatures are consistently above 50 degrees F for at least 7 days. This allows all of our friends who might be using those twigs, branches, and leaves for their diapause an opportunity to wake up and move on. If you insist on removing the plant residues, relocate them to another part of the yard or loosely on top of the compost pile to allow the beneficial critters a chance to emerge when they are ready. No rushing mother nature!

Oooh! I guess I've been living in a closet! ;-) Did you assemble the wires and little nails/holders for attaching the rose canes to a building or did you find that all packaged up by someone as a kit? If the latter. who carries it? Sure looks like the ticket. I have such envy of your no deer environment when I see you growing so many things without them being browsed or you having to constantly use repellent just to see blooms. I guess we all have our blessings from where we live. You would envy all of our rain and greenery (I doubt you'd like the moles and voles though. :-) It all looks great and I admire your ambition and enthusiasm. The rose canes look so pretty one almost hates to see them get covered up by new growth.

Hi guys! I noticed when you cut back the lily plant that you cut the new growth also. Will that hurt the plant at all? Should I let my leaves stay in flower beds until Spring? I never knew that you should take off spent leaves from the rose bush in Spring. Should I do that with all plants? One note about your last weekly recap: You said that the clump birches speak to each other. Some people may think that's weird, but they should read the Smithsonian Magazine article entitled, Do Trees Talk to Each Other? Thank you, Laura, for being such an inspiration and always teaching me (at 74 yo) something new!

I may have a ridiculous question - but here it goes. I have spring bulbs coming up through my flower beds (yay) but I may have heavily planted these bulbs last year and now am trying to figure out how and when to mulch those beds. Can I mulch over my spring bulbs that are starting to peek through the soil (note: some are through 6, some just starting to peek through? Thanks! - Ohio, zone 6a

My goodness I wish I had your stamina. I have small gardens and so many weeds that grow and areas that need cleaning & pruning also! You inspire me to be more proactive and get the job done. I loved watching Benjamin out there with you, I love when my 8 year old granddaughter helps me and my 3 year old grandson has started also! Great memories and beautiful results!

It's always so gratifying watching you steward your property so well.
I get confused about the difference between cleaning away last years dead leaves etc in the spring to clean things up, but then in the fall we are encouraged to cover the ground with dead leaves as mulch. Other than it looking better, is it really important to remove the dead debris?

I love these cleanup videos! So satisfying to watch, and it makes me excited to go out and do cleanup this weekend. Is that a compost pile you have or are starting? Would be great to hear about any composting you do. Id like to start making my own compost instead of buying it every year! Thank you for making even garden chores super fun to watch

I always find these clean up videos so satisfying! I know this isnt related to this specific video but was wondering if you would be able to do a video on how you organize your garden supplies. Ive seen snippets of it in your videos but would love a walkthrough of your storage for garden supplies, tools, irrigation supplies and ect. Thanks!

Hi Laura! Thank you for your hard work. We truly benefit from your love of gardening instead of reciting gardening rules. It make the learning more enjoyable. I was wondering what is going to happen with the curled climbing rose branches? And why not train it up and curved over the window? Is it fullness preference or am I missing something?
