Flower Bed Maintenance & Fertilizing in the South Garden (+ New Lilacs! Garden Answer Rodney: Laura I love your program I have learned a lot from you sad to say because I am 70 years old. Two years ago I lost my wife of 47 years married. So I made her a garden and called it little dove garden boy was it a lot of work so I know some of what you do. Well this December we had a tornado hit our little town and took out 75% in Dawson Springs Ky. We lost 14 people in this its so sad for our town. Any way I had lost my little dove garden my trees all but one. My statues in my pergola I had built. My wife loved tulips so I planted 3000 of them. I dont believe even half of them came up. But it was like the ground just turned over and lotta the boards were sitting on top to me that was a surprise. All my pots just gone I wish I could show you some pics of before you after. But I dont know how to do that. Just wanted to say Im not giving up going to try to get it cleaned up and start over. Like I know you and Aaron would do.

I got up this morning and was instantly in a bad mood when I saw someone had run a trailer over my perennial blue salvia(that was JUST coming back, newly planted Icelandic poppy, and one of my grandmother's daylilies I saved. I was fuming all day. I thought What would Laura do? So, when I got off work I bought three more Salvias and a flat of cosmos then weeded and cleaned out my flowerbed. I plan to put a container on the end of my driveway and DARE anyone to get near my flowerbed with a tire again. lol Seeing your progress on here gives me ideas and the motivation to get out and do things in my flowerbeds. Thanks so much for sharing your journey.

Cant garden here in Sc with out drip/ sprinklers. BUTmy less favorite thing to do in spring is maintenance of all those zonesit takes us a long time, lots if bending, getting up and down. There are always lots of repairs and keeping all those items needed for repairs is expensive and adds up. Have to do it or not flowers for meours is an old system, no phone on and off, manually controlling each zone till it checked out and fixed. Good luck everyone, with spring maintenance

Thanks Laura - your videos are like my 'to-do / reminder list'. I did not fertilize much until I found your videos a few yearss ago - so grateful because it has made such a big difference. Also I learned about using annuals in the ground from you - I used to think Annuals=waste of money but watching you changed my mindset. The past few years my gardens have looked so amazing because of this. So thank you for sharing your knowledge!

I grew up next to a hedge of lilacs and have always loved them. So A few years ago, when I saw a couple of lilac bushes (basically bare root) from Costco, I had dreams of giant lovely bushes. They haven't done great, though the one with more sun is doing better. You mentioned they like alkaline, and my soil here (outside of Philly) is more acidic, or so I've been told. What should I do to help the lilacs with the soil?

I'm thrilled that the dwarf Proven Winter lilac that I planted last summer has made it through the winter and I now see buds so I have hope of having blooms this year. I felt bold enough to try a lilac since I have high PH clay soil. Also, I love the background music in the last several videos for this week. Beautiful music that is relaxing while watching you work. Thanks for all the sharing, Laura and Erin.

Thank you once again for taking the time to do a video. Wow the new area is really coming together what a transformation from when you had just purchased the land and were talking about your dreams for it. Truely inspiring. I do have a question about the flowering shrubs and trees do they always bloom in the first season or do you need to wait a full year for them to establish?

Sort of unrelated but I remembered this when you pointed out the berries. why do you cut out the shoots that grow underground from the raspberries? Just curious. Also, do you have an opinion on rain barrels, I have heard of people saying the stuff that washes off your roof/shingles isn't good to water plants with.

I am a rookie Gardner but I am known to kill any plant which would probably survive. I know you are talking in English but the names of the plants feel like a language I don't know at all. Your videos are very addictive no doubt to see transformation of bare land to this. We all feel like we also own your land

The plan? Just keep workin. I love your style. Just place plant material and dig it in. Your details are so great: when fertilizing, stand upwind, get low & pour. All the common sense and streamlining we could want. Meanwhile the videography is next level, love every edit and even the music breaks.
