Working on Our Friends New Build Landscape! Garden Answer Angela: Laura, the planting looks gorgeous. Why plant the BIHOU and the Japanese Maple so close to the house? Since they get 4 to 6 wide I would think you want to plant at minimum 10-12 feet away from the house. When trees are so close to the house usually the house gets green from the moisture etc. Also the high berms around the foundation of the house arent you concerned with the rain water and melting snow falling backwards towards the house?

I think you just solved a problem for me. I am adding a new bed around a magnolia tree, but can't fill in too much dirt over the roots. I am now going to add a berm at the outer portion of the bed and minimal compost around the tree area. Will scatter marigold seeds under the tree and plant annuals in the berm. Thanks Laura for the video! Your friends house is gorgeous and will enjoy seeing the planting progress.

Im very surprised that you planted that tree in the corner so close to the house. Seems like the root system could eventually damage the foundation. We had to take down five heathy beautiful trees when we bought our new home because the original owners had planted them way too close to the house. Two gorgeous Blue Spruce that would have been too costly to move had to be sacrificed.

Laura this is very interesting and I'm most definitely enjoy seeing you do from the ground up planting evestment new home with Shrubbery and plants. It's wonderful seeing new ideas in a new home with new new planting from the beginning. Thank you for taking us on this magical ride. It gives us new ideas for our homes as we begin ours!

Laura,
Do Dogwoods do well in your area? In keeping w/ your using gorgeous shades of bark for winter interest, there is a redtwig Dogwood called Pucker Up, my personal fav of all the redtwig varieties, that would look amazing against this house! In add'n to the lovely bark, it has really interesting dark green, wrinkly leaf.

Having a professional come and do the plan around my new construction home was the best money spent! It's taken 4 years to get it all in by myself. with tweaks. but having a plan made it so much easier to plant as I could find the plants and time. Excited to watch you bring the design to life!

I see that others have concerns about the berms (and I agree with those concerns, but also I can't help but wonder about the root ball on those bushes. How can they survive in your winter temperatures when the root ball is above the earth's surface?

Warning alert!
Please be careful as there are at least three men replying to women and asking how they are doing or hi, how is the weather. When some answer they ask for location.
Just be careful with strangers asking personal questions.

Thank you so much for doing a blank slate type of video. My home had all creeping grass and no flowerbed so I am essentially starting from scratch and battling the preexisting fauna. This really inspires and provides much needed guidance.

Youre right Laura that entranceway is incredible definitely dont want to hide it. They are so lucky to have you help develop their property. Some fruit trees for sure and maybe a couple cats if you have any extra!
