Planting Yews + Decorating a Few Doors & the Balcony for Christmas! I recently moved to southern Ontario after living on the west coast for the last 14+ years. I forgot how much earlier it gets cold in Ontario. Every other day is different as we enter into winter. I planted my bulbs in a panic last week on a random day where it didn t freeze. Todays video made me feel I was still out west, thank you!

Too late. Ground is frozen and I am over wintering my plants in my garage. I never knew where I wanted to plant my roses and a blue spruce. I was trying to see how much sun was in the front. I discovered there isn't enough sun in my front yard for the roses. They kept getting powdery mildew. Now next spring I will plant them in the backyard. Trying to deal with aphids in the garage. I think I have the right mixture to treat them and I trimmed back the new leaves on the roses since that is where the aphids were. . I am thinking that the rose they were on was in distress since it was the farthest from the window and grow lights?

The ground is already frozen where I live, and our growing zone didn't change with the recent updates. You managed to extend the season for me with this video. Going to work on my holiday porch decorating today. Benjamin really has a knack for staging a scene, his mom's apprentice! Laura, are those the doors you were considering painting a few years back? They look beautiful!

Laura and Aaron, I love how you are incorporating the kids. Benjamin is doing awesome.
I am a mom of an 18 and 23 year old. My husband used to shake his head at me at how long it took to decorate. Now they can decorate without me! or as a team we can get it done quickly here in Michigan when it's cold like this year! He doesn't shake hus head anymore!
Thank you for sharing

Hi Laura,
The weather is certainly weird, but it s nice when it plays in our favour.
I like the simplicity of the monotone Christmas lighting scheme you took this year; it looks so peaceful!
Looking forward to seeing what becomes of the dirt lands and adding 3 more names to your garden: the green mile; the stables and east high tunnels.

Just so inspiring today to see you do some more Christmas decorations on your house. And they look so beautiful. And the evergreens you planted today lovely and l agree it looks so much better now you finished the area with them. And just so cute Benjamin was on hand to help. So good job to Benjamin

I agree with the zone changes. You are one of my inspirations for returning to school at 50 years old to obtain my horticulture degree. In SE Wisconsin along Lake Michigan we are now a zone 6a. I'm interested in knowing how this will impact our natives moving forward. Our wind chill was 9 today.

Hey! Now that you guys are in a zone 7, why don t you try planting a Magnolia tree in the Dirtlands? You mentioned a while back that it died in its container and that you could t find a spot for it in the South Garden. Well now you have the Dirtlands hehe

Laura, you mentioned that you ve made evergreen garland before. Is there a video of that? I d love to see the process. With my mobility issues, garland-making is actually a decorating project I might be able to manage on my own. I d love to try.

Also, this year's decorating is much more classy calm peaceful simply beautiful. I personally think big patches in one color of lights all over becomes sort of gaudy or carnival like. But your property and home always look so festive.

There s just something about classic and simple decorating for Christmas, that fills me up too!
Laura, there was something in your hair after you did the kitchen door decorating, 18: 04. some fluff maybe? I was hoping it wasn t a critter!

Laura, I love the way you decorated this year. It is such a peaceful way to go. With just enough pop of color to remind us of holly or red apples. Makes me think of clean crisp air and the smell of evergreens. Benjamin, you are a joy!

Love the shape and color of the yews. Would they work in an almost completely shaded spot? I have a spot in my backyard that receives almost zero sun due to a very large spruce in my neighbors yard and a large maple in my yard.

When you mentioned how hard it was to made the garland for balcony, it reminded me of the wreath, garland table that Nicole at FlowerHill farm posted a short video recently. You and your Mom need this table! (KH)

I absolutely relate to your feelings after planting. I also agree Christmas is a season to enjoy. Close to Christmas decorating is not worth it. Not enough time to really enjoy it. Snother enjoyable and informative video.

You are an incredible inspiration to me and your home and YARDS are always beautiful. It s a joy to watch and learn from you. Thanks for all the lessons. Benjamin is such a great helper. Blessings to you

Just remember every part of the Yew is very poisenous and the shrubs will have little red berry look-alikes called arils. make sure to teach your children not to pick or worst case eat!

The reason I don't think you are zone 7 is the triple digits in the summer, not the cold. I'm on Long Island NY and we stayed 7b. We get below zero temperatures sometimes but rarely over 100
