How to Divide and Transplant Peonies Peonies rarely need to be divided, but there may be times when it's beneficial or necessary. If the original planting site becomes shady, the plants lack proper air circulation, or additional peony plants are desired, then it's a good idea to dig, divide, and transplant your peonies. Divide herbaceous peonies in the fall when the swollen, red buds are clearly visible. Cut off the foliage at ground level and carefully dig up the plants maintaining as much of the root system as possible. Take care to dig far enough away and deep enough as to not damage storage or feeder roots. Gently shake off or wash off the soil from the roots so that the eyes are clearly visible. Use a sharp knife or pruners to divide the clump into sections leaving at least 3 to 5 eyes and a healthy root system on each division. Plant peonies 3-4 feet apart in full sun and fertile, well-draining soil. Avoid planting them near trees or shrubs where they will compete for water, nutrients, and light. Providing good air circulation around your peonies which will decrease the likelihood of disease in future years. Dig a generous sized hole and position the peonies so that the eyes are covered with 1-2 inches of soil. Planting peonies too deeply will result in only foliage and no flowers. Backfill the hole with soil and water thoroughly. Whether you-re gifting beloved heirloom peonies to a friend, making divisions to spread around your garden, or replanting for health and bloom vigor, dividing and transplanting peonies will pay off tenfold with delightful flowers to enjoy for years to come

Thanks for another great video. I transplanted and split a peony last week that was planted a little too deep and not getting enough sun. It was a beast and difficult to divide, but now I-m a little more optimistic that they-ll not only survive, but perform even better better in my new sunny flower border.

Thank you for this tutorial. I just got bareroot from an online store. I have no experience with peony or bareroot. Should I plant it now or wait till spring? Would it be ok to plant in a pot now? I am keeping it in my fridge as per instruction. I appreciate any suggestion!

I'm sure mine will benefit from a thinning out, mostly for air. Thanks for showing how big the roots can be, guessing now one of mine will be a monster. I bet the people you bought the house from are happy to see what you've done with the garden.

More about when to transplant please. You mentioned when red swollen buds appear. Cant really see that in your video so not really sure what im looking for. Are the visible above ground or am i poking around below ground to find them?

I have been thinking of moving one of mine and thought of dividing it. Thanks for your video on it. Mine seems to get white powdery on the leaves in Aug after blooming. It's right out in the sun too. Soooo. I'm going to move it.

The house we moved into came with 7 peony plants! They all bloom, and look beautiful each Spring. How do you know when they need to be thinned? When they stop blooming?
