I think the roses in that area of the garden is perfect. But, I don't think that bright pink is working. It's not terrible (the roses themselves are beautiful), but it doesn't flow with the rest of the colors you have blooming at the moment. Softer pink /peach would give a more cohesive look. But someone did mention that the roses might just be blooming earlier because they are from the nursery, so it will all depend on the timing. If it was me, I would replace them because you never know with flowers. they can sometimes bloom later one year or earlier the next, and overlap with the other flowers you have blooming in that area. Regardless of what you decide, Im sure it will be beautiful. Your garden is such an inspiration, thank you for sharing it with us!

I don’t love the bright pink with the soft peach, but I think that these roses are blooming earlier than they should, having been brought on to bloom early by the grower. I suspect that next year, they will bloom a little later, after the iris does. Another consideration is that the bright colour of the rose will look better in the summer when the sun is higher in the sky. I always find that pale colours wimp out in bright summer sun, though I prefer them in lower light conditions. Perhaps you could wait until summer before deciding What else will be blooming later on in summer Will the roses look good with those flowers I’m sure that whatever you decide the garden will look gorgeous!

Hi Danielle! I know I'm a bit late to the conversation here, but I just wanted to say that I have these roses in my garden and I chose them for the same reason, because they are so tough, they don't get black spot, they bloom all summer and the japanese beetles don't even bother them like other roses in my garden. In my experience (NS, Canada) the David Austen roses take so much more care and the beetles love them as much as I do! You could always see what they do next year, and if they actually bloom at the same time as your irises or not. They are a great colour for the summer garden I find! And basically indestructible. Thanks for the wonderful videos over the years!

The roses are the wrong colour for this area. Sorry but next season plan on moving them. In gardening design you learn that if you’re adding an opposite colour on the colour wheel it needs to be the same hue. Your other plants are a soft shades whilst the roses are the opposite. I have seen the lady gardener here in Australia and it would be beautiful. We have a rose here called sensation and it’s really disease resistant and never stops flowering throughout the season spring to autumn. If you can get that it’s a good one for this spot. Better continuous flowering than the David Austin’s

I think what matters most is what you think. Is this the feeling you get when you know something is not quite right My thought when you were looking over the lavender iris was wow, that’s a lot of bloom for just a few days and wow, that color is really intense. I like the design. Maybe letting them have this season so you can see how they fit in would work. You can always change them out next spring before they wake up. Plus you can test your theory about the extra space and gravel mulch. I’m looking forward to seeing what you decide. It will be beautiful.

I haven't been on to see what all you've done with your garden in a while. I love the rock paths and formality of the garden. I don't understand why you would plant roses in the path. Knock Outs are black spot resistant but are very susceptible to Rose Rosette disease in my area of Texas. They also grow quite large, making them a maintenance issue in such a small area. I have three KO left out of six. The color is pretty, but you are already questioning your choice. I don't see that changing in time, so I'd take them out now.

I agree with your instinct, I think it’s a little too vibrant. I have Lady Gardener rose and it’s beautiful, but more light cream with hints of apricot, so I’m not sure of the color there. Queen of Sweden is a cool pink, gets somewhat tall (maybe too tall in front of statue) but doesn’t have many thorns. Distant Drums is a real beauty and very disease resistant with a warmer light pink, apricot, that fades to a soft lavender and that might also work If you went more cream, Moonlight in Paris is also nice.

The alliums and irises won't be there all season long. Do you have other flowers that will bloom in that area in the summer I lean toward pastel colors myself and love the colors you have there now. If the rose is the only flower growing in the summer, I think it will fit just fine. If the rose is in bloom the whole time or most of the time the irises and alliums are in flower, I would opt for white roses. This area looks very formal and white roses would add to the elegance, I think. Have fun!

I like the pink roses there. I think they may eventually cover the statue though The knock outs I’ve had were pretty big even with a good winter chopping. I have a question about boxwoods. I’ve never had them before but want to use them as a low hedge in a north facing foundation planting. I’m hoping it will be in front of an Annabella hydrangea hedge. What variety would you suggest I noticed many this year are dying and they are subject to disease which is often impossible to treat.

I like the roses in that area. I have a new driveway garden spot where we removed two trees and a thorny shrub this spring, and I'm thinking about putting some rose bushes there, along with irises, daffodils, and tulips. Maybe I'll plant some annuals in a portion of the bed that I can flip when they fizzle out. I want to have something blooming through each season. What do you think would be good fall and winter plants to add so that I'll have color in my garden even in the cooler months

i love roses too, but. here in east TN so much humidity. the japanese beetle, all the things. i think you will eventually remove them. having said that i have drift 'coral', ;pink' and 'apricot'. the apricot is soooo soft and lovely. the coral has some yellow and is quite stunning each rose a little different. i am going to spray this year. its awful if i don't. such a pain, but worth it. pumps out flowers like crazy all summer. i vote for soft color. :)

Danielle yes this color is off. Take a flower walk through the garden and you will find its place. Perhaps too once your move these you may still just want your stature to be the focal. The roses are a lovely color but not with these iris. What else will be blooming later these roses will bloom till frost. Great bloomers but not if you are not fond of the color. Pick a couple blooms and walk through the garden let me know what you decide. It’s all fun.

I love it. I think if it is too vibrant you can tone it down with blush and apricot colors. Even something soft like Pink Cashmere Verbena. Baker's Creek Heirloom Seeds has some very beautiful petunias. I have them growing next to my Grace Rose Farm roses at the base of it to add texture and color. It is a great ground cover and blooms nonstop. I believe if you wanted to add more roses to soften it up I would add blush and apricot colors.

Such an amazingly gorgeous property and garden. It is so much warmer there than here in Atlantic Canada. We are still wearing winter coats and sweaters. The colour of the roses are beautiful, no colours clash in nature. I love the roses there. The pop of colour is beautiful. I had roses in my garden and they are a beautiful plant, but sadly the deers love to eat the roses so sadly I removed the roses. Thanks for sharing

I love the rose color you picked! You got lucky with the clematis. I pronounce them clah-mat-is. I couldnt afford to buy the bigger clematis so I bought the roots nd praying they even take or bloom this year, lol. I would like to find the trellis you wrapped them around, its gonna be beautiful! I'm in NY and our eggs at Walmart cost $3. 64 so price is coming down. Thankfully much better than what we were paying before.

I'm glad you planted the pink knockout roses. Not everyone can afford David Austin roses and it keeps you relatable to newbie or low income gardeners.
I have several of the dark pink (almost red) knockouts and they bloom all summer until frost with no maintenance. We also have alliums and different colored irises but they will eventually die back. I'm interested to see if you keep them or change them

Hi Danielle! I agree with you that the rose color is too vibrant for that area, but I think the right color rose would look wonderful. I have OSO Easy roses called Italian Ice that are absolutely covered in flowers and buds right now in my zone 7b garden in southeast Oklahoma. I think they might work well in that spot. Just a suggestion to consider. Also, I grew up pronouncing clematis the way you do.

I agree with another commenter about bloom time being off, since it's from a nursery pot. I'd give it a year to see when they bloom naturally for your garden, and see what you think then.
As far as color pallet as is, I don't think the colors clash, but the fact that this bright pink color isn't repeated anywhere else does throw it off a bit. Bright and pastel can go together if there's balance.

agreed the pink is too jarring to go with the calming purple, and while the iris are short bloomers you don't want to have that clashing while it does. Plus, I really don't like the bloom form of the knockout roses, I would go with a softer pink apricot or even creamy david austin style rose. Evelyn and Eustacia Vye are gorgeous, and then there is Desdemona with unbelievable fragrance

I agree.
A lighter coloured rose would add an air of old fashioned delicacy.
The bright pink roses look a bit too modern and distract from the subtle irises and statue.
I think roses are a great choice for the area. perhaps one behind the statue, if there's room.
I'd definitely find something pastel shade and slightly scented too.
Hope this helps, Jo.
