Making Maple Syrup with My Daughter and Two Sisters
video description
I think it would be a fun video if Emily sat your wife and your sisters down and let them tell us all about you shawn. Stories from you growing up and throughout life and there thoughts of the life style you've chosen out in the wilderness and living off the land.
Oh and some funny things if they remember things like that about you.
That's would be interesting to see them talk about you

Next week, you start building your outdoor kitchen, we start assembling our new 5'X8' grillzebo. Yeah, our life isn't as rugged as yours, but we're seniors - 67 and 71 - and going from a small house n' property in Brampton to a 1. 2 acre treed 'homestead' in rural village Quebec is huge for us.
The grillzebo will be my civilized version of an outdoor kitchen/bbq/smoker. There's a huge pile of wood - still buried under 2' of snow - waiting to be split and chopped. Just opened our small greenhouse today.
At least we no longer need to have a fire going overnight in the basement fireplace furnace.
And FTR, you were our major inspiration.

Excellent. I would like to know more about how the syrup is produced by boiling. What do you watch for? Why transfer to a smaller container to finish? Just to concentrate heat in a smaller package? I have never been around syrup making. I have seen quite a lot of sorghum making locally but never been involved in the processing. Just questions. Thanks.

This year it took me 2 weeks to get enough gallons for everyone in the family for the year. Last year it took me twice the time. When you go out using the same number of taps and carry back 80 to 100 gallons with the same number of taps that you would get 40 the last few years, you know it will be a good year. it's all in the weather.

Would love to share a bottle of your syrup. I grew up on a farm and we made cane syrup. The juice from the cane was soooo good. We used a mule to pull the cane chewer around to get the juice out of the cane. So many good memories back in the 50 s. I miss those days. Your still living your dreams and I admire you for it.

I can remember as a little girl, my parents tapping our trees. My mother was so puzzled as to why she was getting so little sap. Little did she know that all of us kids were tipping those buckets and drinking the sap every time we went out to play! (I must ask her if she figured it out next time I call. lol)

Well done Shawn, it s really nice when you share how you feel about your life and your appreciation of all that you have. It is hard work obviously, but has so many benefits, but the least about how happy you are with your life choices. You are an inspiration. Lyn from Tasmania

It's nice to see the lady's there and everyone visiting and enjoying your time together. And seeing the best girl of all. Is a pleasure. Give her a big huge hug for me. She is amazing in my opinion. I hope she was at least given the steak bones. I know she would love that.

Thank you for this beautiful video. Please will you explain to us the process you are using to make the syrup, how long to boil, at what temperature to boil, what are you skimming off the top, the purpose of the two stainless steel square containers?

As you say a good excuse to be out in the beautiful country that is Canada and to be able to tap trees close to home to make delicious maple syrup. You will definitely sleep well tonight when you eventually get to bed. Take care, be safe. Dorset, UK

There's nothing like the sleep you get after a hard day's work. As far as trees and wood I'd give alot to have oak variety, or cherry or pecan or and especially cedar. We have maybe 4 kinds, pine, small pinion, quakie, lodgepole.
