If you’ve ever dreamed of: Building a cabin Living off grid Learning survival skills Homesteading Escaping the modern world you’re in the right place. Subscribe and follow the journey. Self-reliance is often mistaken for isolation, but in the deep woods of the forest, I’ve learned it is actually a form of radical connection. It isn’t about turning your back on the world; it’s about standing on your own two feet so firmly that you can finally hear what the world is trying to tell you. When I first picked up a broadaxe to notch the logs for the cabin, I wasn't just building a shelter. I was dismantling a dependency. Most of us live in a state of digital fragility. We rely on invisible grids for our warmth, global supply chains for our food, and glowing screens for our validation. When those systems falter, we realize how little we actually know about the mechanics of our own survival. To be self-reliant is to reclaim that knowledge. It is the quiet, steady work of bridging the gap between a need and its fulfillment. There is a specific kind of honesty found in manual labor. You cannot lie to a log. If your dovetail joint is sloppy, the house will let the cold in. If you don't stack your wood before the first snow, the fire will go out. In the wilderness, the consequences of your actions are immediate and indisputable. This accountability is the foundation of self-reliance. It forces a man to slow down, to respect the grain of the wood, and to understand that time is not something to be hacked or optimized, but something to be lived. People often ask me if I get lonely out here with only Cali for company. The truth is, the silent forest is where I found my clarity. In the city, the noise is so constant that we lose our own frequency. We become echoes of other people’s opinions and anxieties. But when you are miles from the nearest road, responsible for your own water, your own heat, and your own safety, the internal noise begins to settle. You stop performing for an audience and start existing for a purpose. True self-reliance is found in the Ritual of the Mundane. It’s in the seasoning of a cast-iron skillet, the brewing of pine needle tea, and the sharpening of a tool. These acts are small, but they are sovereign. They represent a life where your hands are in direct contact with your reality. As I look out the cabin window at the treeline, I realize that I am not conquering the wild. I am simply learning its language. Self-reliance is the humility to realize that we are part of a greater ecosystem, and the strength to ensure we aren't a burden to it. It is the peace that comes from knowing that, no matter what happens to the grid, the sun will rise, the forest will provide, and I have the toolsand the willto meet the day. You have not just inspired other creators, you have inspired everyone who has been lucky enough to watch your journey.
In a world that often looks for shortcuts and instant results, you have shown the value of hard work, patience and self-reliance. You have reminded people that there is something deeply rewarding about building, creating and learning to do things for yourself.
Self-reliance is more than just a skill. It strengthens the body through hard work, sharpens the mind through problem-solving, and creates a deeper connection with our environment by teaching us to appreciate what we have and what we can achieve with our own hands.
Watching your growth has been a lesson in perseverance, humility and dedication. Every success you've earned has been built through effort, and that is what makes your journey so inspiring.
Thank you for proving that with determination, curiosity and a willingness to keep learning, ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things.

Congratulations Mr. James. I am happy for you to have reached this point. The last 6 years of watching has been fascinating, inspiring, and sometimes nerve-wracking. I was so frightened for you when you were placing those huge logs for the walls of your house. It was sad when you left your last home but the journey to what you have achieved with this one has been something wonderful and I have enjoyed it immensely. Thank you so much for sharing this part of your life. Well wishes to you and your family, Cali included, and may you have much peace and happiness in your new home.

What he has been able to build on his homestead is just AMAZING & BEAUTIFUL. I just feel bad that the danger of having it all being taken away in a heartbeat if there were ever a natural disaster, economic melt down, military take over for whatever reason would just be heart breaking. We live in a very unstable, volatile world. So, live everyday to the fullest, and never take for granted your freedoms of how you choose to live your life. Because, someday it could all change and be taken away from you.

Congratulations on reaching the finishing end of your beautiful home. Have followed you from your previous build and Cali as a puppy and like your other followers, gained peaceful, knowledge-filled bubbles of time which does bring us all back to what life and its gifts, rewards and yes, problems really is. Your cheesy egg & bacon bites looked amazing. Never thought of using puff pastry in this particular way. Also what cheese do you use

Hi Shawn hope your doing well, I noticed your 1000L Tote had the wood cover on it and I’m assuming you did this cause of the issue with the Sun causing algae on the inside I have the same problem I live in a city and have two 1K Totes and I thought your idea was a good one with the wood, you can buy the covers for them but I don’t know how long they would last. Anyways thanks for your content and appreciate all you do. Cheers

There are people who simply have a cabin (me, having grown up with the one I own these days) and those who build a cabin from ground up with their own hands, tenacity, sheer willpower and determination. (you, Mr. Shawn James. I have been following this from the first cabin (sauna build, enhancement, workshop build) to the relocation/build till now.
May the Lord in the Heavens bless your family, you and that Cali of yours.

When the first episode of this build appeared on YT, I was considering changing plans for my future. I've followed along the whole way and it has helped me plot my change. It's not about trying to replicate this build in any way. Change results from inputs like stress but it is catalyzed by thought. This build helped me think in ways that make better sense than where I was at before. Thank you and stay safe out there.

What an amazing achievement, been watching here in the UK from the old cabin to breaking ground on this one, really has been a huge inspiration! Always wanted to build my own cabin an this year on a smaller scale I have. I started a Sauna cabin about 6 weeks ago and will finish the exterior this week. There have been so many little things I’ve seen you do that have been useful during my small build. Thank you Shaun

I’ve been a fan since your first small cabin many years ago. I love how you keep working on your home making it be so beautiful out in the forest. Please don’t ever leave this one. I love each segment. I especially love the formal bedroom you built for your wife. Maybe one day she’ll give up the city life and become your partner in the world you have built in the first. Can’t wait for your next one.

Shawn this is a modern masterpiece. I am so fortunate to live in a close to the city cottage enclave which is like a piece of heaven. Driving to any of our formerly small towns I am seeing acres of future ghettos being built. Not a tree in sight and tightly jammed together. Humanity cannot thrive in such circumstances. Thank you for showing how it can be done. Cali is a national treasure.

I stopped watching a while ago partly because of what I felt were bait and switch or misleading video descriptions. Watched again today only to be majorly disappointed. Only the last part was any kind of tour and it was very limited. I won't watch again. I was a long time viewer from the old cabin to this one.

Watching your cabin over the years, why haven't there been a consideration for a well-thought-out and welcoming entrance steps to the front door Especially now that the finer work is in progress, I believe a wonderful and beautiful steps to your home is now overdue. What do you think

I remember when he started this log cabin build around 10 years ago. It was a simple small dwelling that has blossomed into a much larger home over the years with additions and outdoor projects that has made this place suitable for raising a family, it has everything now

What more can could anyone need All it takes is hard work, a little skill, and a boat load of determination. Having a partner that works beside you is essential as well. Even if we do not always see her. My heart feels good after watching you and I feel inspired. Thank you!

I come to your videos, just exhausted from the day. Like most of us, anyway. But get 20 minutes of SJ doing his thing, along side him most trustworthy mate, Cali, and I'm good for another hour on some project I have stacked. Cheers, brother!

Solar cells and winter are difficult, have you thought about panels above the entrance. Wiring and installation can be done fairly discreetly if you think about how they can be placed. The sun is on the front side during the day, right
