Guaranteed they head for water when they are hit good. I've gone swimming far more than once for deer and I'm sure it'll happen again lol. I always check the water before backing out if I have to -back out-. 8 out of 10 times I end up tripping right over it and it saves me a trip back the next day and a sleepless night. .also if you get a stiff one you can tie a rope around the head/neck or through the mouth and the opposite side rear leg and bend the deer in half. This rolls them into a stiff ball and another piece of rope and a stick makes dragging them out REALLY easy because you reduce the ground contact surface area and they end up gliding, even over small obstacles pretty easy comparatively. I use a ratchet strap around the body so you don't have to fight with a slip knot and a rope NOT holding hard tension as you make adjustments while building your buck/doe ball. The ratchet strap is also good for grip and a regular drag and you can use it over the shoulder and across the chest without it digging in sharply like a rope does when your dragging or lifting over obstacles.

IF you've got a blaze orange vest to wrap around the deer, dress it and carry it on an A frame pack frame. Simple to make if you've brought some straps and a saw to cut the necessary 4 poles. 2 of them about as long as you are tall. One across at your belt height, one across the bottoms of the long poles. Set the harness so that when you stand up and lean forward, the bottoms of the long poles are about 8-10- above the ground. When you need to rest, lean back and squat a few inches. the poles will touch and the weight comes off of you.

Nice work and nice Buck, not sure if its just me but i find the processing part almost therapeutic. such a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction knowing its the result of all the hard wok put into getting to that part of the harvest (if your lucky enough to get your deer.
Ive learned hard work doesn't always mean success. so enjoy it while you have it.
Great Job!

Cool, finally bow hunting. But what bow were you using? A -reasonable- bow or one with stabilizers, high tech sight which basically does most the work for you: P

Use a 30/06 next time and you can drop in its tracks. Now you have an animal that has rotting guts in it for a day. you need to gut them immediately

So how many hours did it layup you think?
I thought when things got stiff it was bad?
Is there a certain timeline on how long it can lay?
