Awesome video! But I just wanted to say I used to dispatch trout whacking them on the head too. But I found that by grabbing in the gills and braking the spine works much better. I'm just interested in hearing your thoughts on that. I've had great success smoking even though I snapped the head. I was worried they would fall on the smoker. I only recommend this for trout but it's a much easier way of dispatch. When I cook trout I wont fillet. I'll even leave the head sometimes. With butter, gala apples, and onion with garlic salt stuffed inside the gut I'll wrap it in foil and cook. Once cooked run a knife along the back bone and by flipping the fish over holding the spine, you will extract most bones. After that your left with very few -y- bones. Thanks for sharing all you do! Stay WILD!

Gill netting is usually illegal but from my understanding is that tribal commercial fisherman (either for sale for seasonal income, or stocking up traditional food for tribal feeding such as community feast or funeral and ceremony foods) are the only ones that can legally use gill next at our major river (Columbia River) and the same goes for night set hoop nets and dip net a traditional fishing sites. They are all written into our treaties and rights. Back when the Salmon were running in the hundreds of millions just in our main river.

the way you use the net is wrong.
it will make the web broken and only use once.
You should tie the net in both long sticks so that when the fish are entangled it doesn't make the net wrapped around like that so it's hard to let go of the entangled fish.

you definitely need heavier weights and larger mesh. The net should stay where you set it. When you get the messes in their gills where it's supposed to catch them, they die much more quickly and mess up your net a lot less.

Unfortuately they are not illegal for inshore fishing in North Carolina. It-s so sad see how fast you caught trout they do the same thing but the trout and redfish really school up it-s sad

This is crazy and the price of these are often way high for the quality. Would you guys be interested in trying out hand made survival nets? they are far stronger and floats well.

Just one thing. you are to tie off the ends on the top line of the net to keep it tight. then it would be reusable also.
It work much better if you knew how to use a gill net.
