When youre going to fess up to poor maintenance of your gear or in this case -braided line- - TALK to the manufacturers and get their best answers on issues.
From my experience - Having used braids now for decades, the line made now DOES deteriorate. Use a well maintained scale and TEST your main line for breaking strength on a SET DATE or at least BEFORE your first trip of the year if in cold climates.
You WILL be surprised at how much of that initial strength seems to mysteriously vaporized over the passage of seasons. While the level of deterioration can and will vary by conditions the line was used within, there WILL be loss. My findings REAL WORLD are about 11% to 18% per year! Starting with 65LB braid thats a chunk - especially because I have YET to find braid that actually HAS the breaking strength as listed - typically its 4 to 7% LESS than advertised.
PLEASE do NOT read this as an insult - its not! This is a nudge to CONTINUE the great tradition of fishermen SHARING real world information. Al & Ron were two people I knew - when I fished a place called WOLF LAKE - lol. Let them hear that and youll hear roars of laughter erupt. But the most important thing I relay here is spend the time to do good research, and use logs to track info. Once you do, all your future fishing will get better and better. Wishing you continued success.
