Hunting extreme cold in Texas for whitetail deer RetroCNY: It's great seeing you hunting and enjoying the outdoors after the ordeal you went through. Really enjoy it man. As far as the cold, I know what that's like. I live and hunt in central New York, near Oneida Lake, and a couple hours south of the St Lawrence. It gets cold up here. Today was the last day for the regular firearms deer season, and it's always a sad day when that time rolls around. There's still the special muzzleloader season that lasts a week and begins tomorrow, but I personally won't be getting out there.
I just got done butchering our family's 3rd deer today. We do it all ourselves, so we don't have to worry about shoddy wasteful butchers or getting back meat that wasn't ours to start with, etc. I shot a big doe in the bow season, and last Friday night at around 4: 40pm(right around last legal light) I took a nice 8 point with the rifle. Usually we like to let them hang for upwards of a week but it's gonna be too cold this week and the meat would've froze and you can't have that so I had to get him butchered today. Loads of work lol. So I shot two this year, and I was there when my grandfather scored his deer for the season. We only shoot as much as we can eat so one was enough for him.
I was due for a good buck this year. It's rare to see true TV class monsters up here, but I saw a few nice bucks on the hoof this season and had a heartbreaking missed opportunity during the bow season at a real buck of a lifetime. 13 or more points, best guess was he would've scored high 140s and for this area of the country that's a monster. Long story short he stopped behind one of the only pieces of cover in front of my stand, and wouldn't step out into my shooting lanes. Only 15 yards away. Had other close calls in the opening week of the firearms season that involved another 8 point and a 10 point that refused to give me ethical shot opportunities so I had to let them go. I was due for a buck, and I just got lucky enough to see this particular one on friday and have him give me a perfect shot opportunity just before it would've been too dark to shoot. We hunt on our own property, 100% fair chase, no artificial baiting or genetically altered food plot stuff you see on store shelves at bass pros. Hunting is hard in this area, so any year you can get the job done is a great feeling.
Enjoyed the video man. Enjoy whatever time of the season you have left down in Texas.

I found shooting gloves in mittens that have a pocket for hot hands hand warmers. The gloves part fit into the mitten but quickly flip out to shoot and keep your hands warm. Hunting in WI teaches you that if your hands, feet and face/head get cold it is all over. Have fun and shoot straight!

I love your videos LFG. But Texans do not know cold. In Idaho, I hunt Elk when it is 10 below zero. Man up. you two are light weights. Heh, heh, haa, I love both you and outlaw. Drag a elk carcass five miles at minus 10 degrees. There you become a man!
