Fly Fishing: BIG Chum Salmon in a Tiny Alaskan Creek

In the 5th and final episode of #FieldTrips: Alaska, we've left the lodge but still have one more day in Juneau. By sheer luck, a guy named Peter Fasolino messaged me on Instagram and invited us to go fishing for chum salmon. This was one of the craziest things I've ever seen: salmon EVERYWHERE in 3 inches of water! We proceed to catch a bunch, and then I try fresh salmon eggs from right out of the fish

#1 those aren't BIG chum by Alaska standards. #2 any idiot can floss to hook a fish which isn't anything to be proud of, or much less boastful of, more like something you hide. Plus, such tactics can have devastating outcomes when overly done or put to use on vulnerable species. #3 chum readily strike a huge array of flies and lures -- same for reds (sockeyes) too for that matter, which are much like chum when it comes to dietary habits -- so doing the snagging-in-mouth/ snagging near the mouth is essentially an example of laziness. And flossed chum in 6 inches of water? Really? Where is the challenge and sport in that? #4 I trust that aluminum can in your hands didn't get tossed to the ground as litter. #5 milking a spawning fish of its roe is deplorable.

Some days I get pissed because I watch people just snag chums the whole tide change, while I let my fish go because they're fowl hooked. I want to get hook ups in the mouth that are nice to bring to my table but once the snaggers catch a chrome, they turn tail and leave the snag hole, chromer by the gills kicking only to toss it in the bushes then snag more spawned out ones. Thanks for ruining fisheries.

Hey why all the hate? This trip looked amazing, who cares about the how and how many fish you get, its the adventure, the surroundings and memories created. I cant wait to go visit my son who is stationed in Anchorage and do some fishing and take in the natural wonders.

They will die anyway but this video is very good for teaching how NOT to do catch and release so i will use it for that purpose and tell people to watch it so they know what NOT to do when they want to release any specie of fish basicly.

That was a terrible display in salmon fishing ethics. If you are snagging just about ever fish you catch you should not be fishing there. As a rule I don't comment on Youtube videos but come on man. That was pathetic.

Guys, Ive always fresh watered my whole life, even though I live in CT. I really want to get into saltwater fishing, what rod and reel would you recommend?

We are spending millions to devolve these fish. We need to focus on the wild runs before they are all gone and all we have is farmed fish.

I've never been able to find a way to cook Chums where I enjoy eating them, but holy crap they're fun to catch! Catch and release for me
