Kayak Fishing: Monster Alligator Gar in Texas - Prequel

Robert Field heads down to the Trinity River in central Texas in search of river monsters. Alligator gar can grow in excess of 300 pounds and over 7 feet long, and they are notorious for leaping out of the water when hooked. Robert joins Henry Martin and George Saber to give these fish a run for their money, but they prove to be more difficult to land than he anticipated. Watch to find out if he's able to wrangle in one of these prehistoric beasts

Nice gar. My best was 6'3. Used carp for bait and had two opposing hooks on a steel leader.
I did catch a monster in the winter on Lavaca river with a speck rig. Took an hour to bring it up to
the surface because I was just using my trout rig. Ruined my spinning reel.

Excellent video! I can't wait to see Part 2. I've seen some other vids of guys doing the Trinity river run and I know there's some fantastic gar out there. Can't wait to see how you put the Yaknaggie flair into it! :)

Great video as always man, I've been waiting for a gar vid from you! Tons of fun, I have some property in Centerville right on the Trinity and fish there while it's not deer season, see 6-7 footers all the time

Ohh yea gars get born ( hatch) with 30 pounds. Sadly most the hooked gars dies after release in the next days or even weeks. If you open a dead one you can see they are ripped up inside.

how good is that ramp? I've been wanting to go there and launch a 19ft Jon boat. the drive is far just to go check it out, the drier the river I bet is even worst

Man you guys are rigging that all wrong and using the wrong fish. My dad brought me fishing for these for years and I've seen 8 1/2 footers come to the bank.

What hooks do you use to fish for them? I've only bowfished gar. I recently purchased my first kayak and plan to try for one with a pole.
