Look at that. 5600x being as efficient as a 7950x. (eco mode be dammed, not paying extra for the power hungry design and retail price.) You just slam a AM4 system into a dark part of your home and let it render/do whatever over night and day. Then the money going into buying a AM5 system can be used to by Intel since they are good on value this generation and basically do anything you want better then a AM5 system today. Yee this is what you get AMD :)
Not really true but the point still stands. For pure time wasting work that takes 4h on a AM5 7950x. A 5600x can do in what? 12h? You still have PCIE 4 and PCIE 3 is enough to slot in a slower card and make it just do the very long work crunching. Like anyone that do not need the fastest machine for work enjoy.
It literally can be a good reason to skip AM5 and upgrade a GPU instead. And donate that older GPU into the render box AM4. Like AMD makes it really hard to justify AM5 even when x3d comes out.

So, no reason to upgrade when most games are over 60-100fps anyway with an R7 2700/R5 2600. Only for those with fast 144Hz monitors who want everything running at at least 144fps.
For productivity, strange not mentioning of R9 5950X. R9 5950X should be checked, considering it offers 12900K application performance and has also seen a price drop. Or the R9 5900X that is the same price as the X3D. There are plenty of options for the AM4 owners to upgrade, not just for gaming, but for everything. People can still upgrade to X3D or 5900X or 5950X and consider moving into a DDR5 platform much latter, like 2024 or 2025, instead of investing today in a new platform and doing a CPU upgrade latter. AM4 was really a high end platform sold as mainstream. That's why it was and still is such a success.

Upgraded my R5 2600X to a R5 5500 2 months ago, when the R5 5500 was on sale for a limited time at 100 euros. Sold the R5 2600X for 70 euros, so in the end I gone 2 Zen generations up for just 30 euros. My second system is running an R7 2700X that will be replaced in the future either with an R7 5800X3D or an R9 59x0X, depending what it will be more important by that time. I might switch one of these systems to AM5 in 2023 or 2024, thinking AM5 will be more than enough until 2027, maybe even more considering Intel and AMD are hitting the brakes. Intel's switch to a hybrid model, will force AMD to also follow, so we can expect CPU performance in the future to somewhat stagnate, before speeding up again.

If we look back, the first excellent AM4 boards were also much more pricey than today, the CPUs, too. Sometimes I miss this comparison if some people talk about the AM5-platform; especially how powerful the 7600 has become. Btw I will ugrade our AM4, too - not alone due to performance, but to be Win11 ready - well I stay on 10 as long as possible, knowing a %% her and ther could be lost but who cares, if you upgrade from a 1800x or 2600 to a 5800X3D or 5600X - more power than often necessary :9
Though the 12 core AM4 came also extreme down in price, great for an excellent home server with lots and lots of VMs (where users can really have own cores and GPU or vGPU).

NVMe gen 5.0 SSD's at blazing fast speeds of 10000MBs to 15000MBs coming out..? I'm a AMD Ryzen fan and bulit a new crazy expensive :( X670E MotherBoard WorkStation that supports this new technolgy for my mom because she is a Writer/Publisher, and needs the lastest technology to get her work completed in a timely manner. This is the last piece of hardware I need so when is it coming out would you, or any of your friends know???

Just went from 2600 that I had been running all core OC 4.1ghz to 5600x as was on special for 146 and it was just barely worth it for me. The gains in use are really minimal but I was really expecting that as the 2600 was a beast and was only very select cpu heavy stuff I was lacking just enough in it was starting to get irritating. I honestly expected more out the box from 5600x and after doing just a quick core by core in ryzen master it sure was strong but little less so than I had hoped for.... Super stoked I waited out and got a really good sale price.

Just upgraded my ryzen 7 2700 to a ryzen 5 5600 the performance difference in games is huge because of the lows. Only problem is my multi-core score is lower than it should be but Im guessing its my bios version that limits the power draw when all cores are used at maximum. Read that this is a problem with my Bios version but I have no interest in updating my bios again since I dont do a lot of multi-core applications and I rather wait a little bit longer than updating my Bios again in fear of breaking it.

2:30 - I'd be more worried about the 5900X as an upgrade, it uses quite a lot more power than the 5950X as shown by your own charts. For gaming, it wouldn't surprise me if the 5950X actually uses less power than a 3700X or somesuch because it's the best binned part for AM4. Note the power consumption shown at 18:35, ie. if a mbd can handle those overclocks for the old Zen+ parts then it'll certainly handle a 5950X. It's a pity the 5950X isn't included in the efficiency chart at 19:15.

My sister wants me to build her a PC. She doesn't do heavy workloads but uses Photoshop every now and then. I was thinking of giving her my 3600x 16gb b550 build but have them buy their own GPU. This would give me the opportunity to upgrade to the 7000 series (as I want the upgradeability of the AM platform). But considering the cost of the AM5 platform right now, I have trouble assigning value to a new platform over the AM4 with 5800x3d with lower costs.

Even though I would prefer to see them compared using RX 6800 (XT) at 1440p, at least you didn't use 2k RTX 4090 for this. Close enough.
People still gaming with R5 2600 and RTX 3090ti owners are quite different customer segments from what I can tell around me. You don't spend 1000 on a GPU to upgrade 250 system. But I get it you need a single reference point for all those different chips. And for a 5800X3D it's realistic price point. So yeah, close enough.

lol i just upgraded from a 2600 to a 5600x... personally i haven't noticed a lot of difference but definitely more stable framerates in most games and overall just slightly smother i am also using a EVGA 3080 FTW 3... so as far as i can tell i just eliminated a slight bottleneck.. but the way i see it this was cheaper than a 7000 series upgrade and should keep things running well for a few more years while i wait for the newer platform to come down in price..

Wow, this is perfect timing, I just got a used 3090 and I'm on a 2600X, looking to get a 5800X (3D would be nice but its just too expensive). My local Microcenter currently has a 5600X for 150 and 5800X for 200. So I guess I'm upgrading my CPU today lol
As a side note, can I just update my BIOS before slapping the 5800X in or do I need to put it on a flash drive and do it when I put the new CPU in? Not sure I've ever updated the BIOS before tbh lmao

I went back to building PCs after being stuck on laptops for a few years; built a 1500X on an AsRock AB350 Pro 4. The system now shows its age terribly, my budget is tight so I'm really stuck between choosing a couple of drop-in upgrades or going all-in on and future proof my build. I use Ableton which is CPU intensive and Davinci that is GPU intensive a lot, so I'm leaning on the option of waiting out the early adopter tax and go AM5.
