Intel i7-13700K CPU Review & Benchmarks vs. AMD R7 7700X, i5-13600K

The Intel Core i7-13700K CPU review & benchmarks finally arrived, following-up our Intel i5-13600K and i9-13900K CPU reviews to give a full comparison of the Intel options. We had this one in the pipeline for a while, but kept getting delayed by other content (mostly the 12VHPWR cable research on the RTX 4090 -- but that's done now!). This review and benchmark of the Intel i7-13700K tests it vs. the 13600K, 13900K, AMD Ryzen 7 7700X, R5 7600X, and more. We'll also look at how it compares to the previous generation of Intel parts.

I went from a i7- 4790k that I got back in 2015 to the 13700K last week and ....oof......what a serious performance increase I am seeing in....well....everything. I tend to upgrade once every 5-6 years. I waited almost just a bit shy of 8 years now. Totally....worth it. I can see this CPU getting me through the next 5-8 years just as my i7-920 from 2009 and my i7-4790K from 2015 till a week ago.
Couple that 13700k with DDR5 and I am set for quite awhile. Going to get the new AMD card here in December and then I'll have a hell of a build.

So I've built 2 13700's now. Good luck keeping it cool. I'm on a Noctua DH15 in a Lian Li Evo. From the research I've done on groups, even AIO's are near my temps on air. Get a 360, I just don't want an AIO in my 24/7 build. Wild. Core package in HW64 is 34 idle at desktop, but cinebench r23 will hit 100C within 2 mins, and just bounce back and forth between 97 /100. Score is about 31000 after a 10mins run. I'll have to underclock I guess. I am hitting the 253 watt too. Gaming it is fine. I'll just stop cinebench and move on.

The 13600k definitely seems like the best buy of the new Intel CPUs. I don't know if I can justify the extra cost for the modest-moderate production gains of the 13900k, even though I love me some core count.
It's one thing if it were straight labour time saved, but if you have an efficient workload you are multi-tasking with other tasks during the down-time anyway. (I add the extra explaination because apparently people get offended easily by opinions that might appear to slight their silicon waifu).

Just installed my new 13600k with a z690 (all hail Q-Flash Plus) following your review of it. These new benchmarks just further cement my decision. I really wanted to go AMD to upgrade my ageing 8700k, but the value in the 13600k is just crazy. Especially paired with a discounted old MB and the RAM I already had.
I hope AMD can do something for the 3Ds to redeem themselves on this generation a bit, the cost of entry is just too high and not justifiable right now.
Thanks Steve !

Good video, hmm I am not sure if I should replace my i-7 8700k or not yet. I am quite tempted if there are good sales on black Friday and cyber Monday. I do plan on getting a new video card, probably the upcoming Radeon RX 7900 series. I would like a rtx4090 but that price is insane. PS: Would I need a bigger power supply with a 13700k and a new video card? I have a 1000 watt evga titanium. I'm worried I might need to bump to a 1500 watt =(

Ryzen 7000 chips have some solid discounts atm. It's funny how the 5800X3D and the 13th gen are each company going out on a high note for their now dead sockets. Really great to see this competition, but I'll always laugh how Intel acted against chiplet and 'glued together' dies only to follow suit with some AMD approaches. The power draw difference is definitely in favor of AMD. The next 5 years will be a lot of goodness for PC builders!

all i am seeing here is if you are already on 12th gen then an OC will get you similar results to 13th gen with exception to the 13900k with its 8 additional e-cores over the 12900k and 13700k. IPC shows no sizeable increase and the differences for gaming can be mostly attributed to clock speed and to a lesser extent cache at this point. But if you are on any older generation then jumping to 13th gen is the better bang for your buck.

Not sure why the hate for Ryzen 7700x.. I got it for 350
I did some undervolt with 100MHz OC & capped the max temps option to 80c.. man it's beast
It's run at 5.5GHz on light games.. & it's dip to 5.3 in heavy workloads.. not bad at all & that with avg 120mm fan (might get more eith AIO)
Now my GPU (RX 6800XT) can't keep up with it.. still, I'll jump to any AMD platform (AM4/5) considering the Platform longer lifespan

For some niche games, there is still an FPS problem, especially in VR. Im a keen DCS player in VR and there s still bottleneck problems with a 12900. Perhaps it s time to introduce DCS (in VR) into your metrics as it is really challenging, even to high end processors and GPUs. I mean, 200 fps; I admit it does show how different processors perform, but isn t that meaningless to a gamer?

I went from a 12700kf to a 13700k and i think it was totally worth it and i love i7 there so under rated i dont need an i9 for the small video production color grading i do snd definitely no-one needs an i9 for gaming lol what for 2 fps it s all gpu bound now lol but I m still kinda nervous cuz the 7900x 3d and ts cache is making me have buyers remorse there will be monsters

The power draw puts me off. At this top range of FPS it also makes you wonder what is actually worth the money. Like 300 Vs 600 FPS or whatever.
Im on an 8700k and it's starting to get long in the tooth. An upgrade is coming, but I am wondering what the 7800x3D will bring. After all the 5800x3d is still holding its own against these new chips.

I feel like something holds back the current 8P core Intel chips in gaming compared to the 6P core config., it could be either the memory bandwidth or core-core latencies, if it's the memory then we might see bigger difference with upcoming ddr5 7000 and faster memory kits as long as the Raptor Lake chips can handle them of course.

I just upgraded to the 13700K from a 9900X and it is SUCH an improvement. I actually had the i9 in my cart, but by the time I compared a few motherboards it had sold out. Honestly so happy that made me consider the i7 because I really needed that cool your jets moment The difference between the i9 and i7 seems so negligible for my uses

I did some quick math for my sanity to see if CPU prices were really crazy high. My 3770k, which was the top of the desktop line, would cost around 440 adjusted for inflation. So the new CPUs are only kinda high (comparatively) when you factor in that they have competition now. (1.8% a year for 9 years, then 15% for the last year)
