Strange AliExpress Motherboards with Built-in CPUs: Erying Skyline & Polestar

The Erying Skyline and Polar Star (sometimes polestar) motherboards offer a unique combination of a laptop CPU with pseudo-DIY motherboards, potentially offering a good value short of going full DIY. You could build cheaper than 13400 and board combo with this - but it comes with some oddities (and some bizarrely honest marketing). The mini-ITX board in particular is a fairly high-power laptop 12th Gen 12700H CPU with a custom-made IHS, with the CPU directly soldered to the board. We also bought one with an 11980HK - -but we got malware flags on the driver downloads.

This board makes sense for NAS build, you'd be using Linux distribution so Windows drivers aspect is a non-issue, kernel should support the board on most distros... Connect 2 RJ45s for potentially better net traffic, use x16 slot for media accelerator/faster nic/m.2 extra slots/hba, use slower M.2 for M.2 to 4xSATA, and you have a dual M.2 (for caches/hot storage) and 6xSATA for colder capacity oriented storage... It s going to be way stronger than those Celerons typically found in NASes, with maybe comparable idlen power draws (due to laptop origins), and only 100W for peaks but offering more than thrice the compute performance of the up to 30W Celerons of the NASes. One or two drawbacks: the BIOS may not be super stable with all the possible combos of connected components and no ECC support... but you're getting Intel's iGPU with quite new transcoding engines for widest support in media processing software, and 14 cores that could accommodate multiple containers side by side and then some compute for the OS... I'd say these could be used for some fine homelab Kubernetes clusters besides the storage offerings... Heck, the manufacturer could have easily spliced these into some NAS case as well as discussed to attempt pushing the big ones like Qnap, Asustor, Terramaster, Synology into thinking similarly outside the box...

I have two of the 12500H mATX boards on the way - going to be putting a Mellanox CX354A 56Gbps card in each and hooking them up to a SX6036 Infiniband/Eth switch. I plan to use them as power efficient compute nodes :) and also maybe use ClusterPlex to offload transcoding to them. I also have one white and one black Coolermaster NR200P on the way (I've ALWAYS wanted to do twin black/white systems). My wallet hurts..
Edit: Oh! I'm also gonna see if I can mess around with direct die cooling.. The 12500h mATX comes with the copper slug IHS (which I imagine is better than the alu one?) but still. I've also heard the stock paste is pretty cheapo stuff - would be interesting to see before/after temps with a repaste. Check out /r/EryingMotherboard for people's experiences!

Love the product, just to what it stands for saving and reuse the electronics instead of ruining the environment. ASSUS need to learn from these guys :). Also i'm pretty sure battery confiscation thing related to per safety regulations it's required to be labeled as contains lithium battery and classified as such shipment. Yes, it all applies even for tiny coin cell batteries. :) Also about malware, it might be easier for attacker to go after small unknown to general public company (because of why is another question) but is it really easier than in-house big vendors developers putting bloatware and cloud crap by design into their junkware on big sites where lot more non-techy people fall for it?....

Listen that potential war with China scares me, as it will be WW3, BUT...Chinese have been doing amazing things with those server Xeon cpus and innovating their own designs from older cpus that anyone could game on. They gave us 8 core Xeon boards for 60-80 bucks and backwards engineered sockets for practical use. Gave us 2 cpu designs with Xeons v2 and v1
And now designing 3 NVME board with actually a decent cpu.
If it was x16 PCIE, then this board would have been incredible, but it is amazing already
Innovating the market. Chinese leaped bounds in years, and have engineers that can surpass American engineers in ingenuity.

I love the East Asian e-waste recycle/re-use philosophy and wish we in the USA would adapt some type of similar system. Low income families wanting a small home computer would not be a huge market but the no waste/landfill transportation cost would offset the small budget for r&d for this type of thing somewhat. Just sell it as is, no warranties or guarantees and it would be fine and cheap! I have transitioned from desktops with higher power gaming rigs to mid range laptop gaming systems as all the games I play are years old and it kicks all their asses so I know laptop cpus are viable and fast in their own right.

7:28 You can see that it's only a PCIex8 slot by the amount of differential pairs wired to the slot. Especially the capacitor pairs used for impedance matching there should be one pair per lane. There are 8 pairs of capacitors so it's PCIex8 the other half of the slot has no traces. Or counting traces there are 16-pairs (1 RX and 1 TX per lane) so 8 lanes in total.
About the BIOS... I wonder if they had to deal with any Boot Guard limitations if not than someone might potentially be able to port coreboot on it and fix some of the issues although that would in itself require a lot of work.

Man I LOVE this video. Re-purposing mobile laptop APUs by soldering them into the body of a desktop motherboard, so no more components go to waste.
Talk about an idea that deserves our support, that is sustainability in practice!
Too bad the US/Americans are too busy throwing away USEFUL stuff, still believing in recycling (which is a scam and a nice word for 'WE'LL JUST DUMP THIS SHIT IN A COUNTRY NOBODY CARES ABOUT') and still looking forward to the next big thing, even if it is the same stuff they already own, but with more capacity or in a different color.

I would never ever ever install chinese hardware or software on my computer... yes, most stuff is made in China these days, but there's still a difference between buying a board from Intel, or from a chinese company basically run by the chinese goverment, which in turn is the worst kind of police real-time surveillance state you could possibly think up.
Add to that the number of incidents where explicit spyware was found in products and software coming directly from chinese manufacturers, and anyone who buys that stuff is really playing with fire.

I really like these kinds of hardware products that save good stuff (considered to be outdated, usually way too early for common consumer) from a landfill and which allow many of us to build decent PC's for cheap. I remember first s775 Xeon mods made with a sticker, then newly engineered x79\x99 s2011 motherboards from old components supporting better Xeons, all kinds of mobile GPUs and refurbished after-mining GPU chips resoldered to a brand new PCB's with new components for a cheaper video card options. I hope the trend will continue.

I don't get it at all. It's 320 , it's slower than 12100 in games and roughly the same in productivity as cheap 12400. You can have any of these with a decent board for less with warranty. Without potential reliability issues, heat issues, stable bios, full 16x PCI-E, and also upgradable.
If you really want that productivity performance, you usually need it to be reliable and worry-free as much as possible, and this isn't it.
For the price it is, it should be trashed. Maybe for 150 it would be worth the risk, but not for 320 .

I bought one of those 11th gen boards for a build i did a few months back and I really like it. Pretty good value, and really fun to try something diffent. I did run into the virus warning as well. Solved it by downloading the driver from another source (Intel, if I remember correctly).
My greatest problem was that the windows installation kept failing. Turned out that I had to disable Intel Virtualisation in the BIOS since it requires some drivers which isn't included in the base windows installer.

The rest of the developing world survives & thrives off The Right to Repair (for lack of a funnier phrase) but in the US, companies hate it. They act like their regulatory counterparts in Autocratic countries, like The Peoples Party in China. Lying, Ret-conning History, Distorting the Truth, Prosecuting Objectors, Threatening Retaliation, etc. Since COMPANIES RUN AMERICA, you really live in a Failed State.
The real subjects are Businesses, people are just assets and liabilities.

I actually have the same board with the 12500h for my tv with a 6950xt running Arch Linux and so far I had no issues but I did change the thermal compound on the heat spreader with a PTM7950. Ironically the worse decision I made is using an Asus Z11 case, big, bulky and has terrible design and io options. I got it for 48 dollars and I should have bought another nr200p. And another note they recently changed the backplate for the cpu heat spreader it s more of a standard lga square backplate

Reminds me of a Aliexpress special board I got this year. It's an mATX board with a PGA988 socket for first gen core i mobile CPUs.
I bought one of the best i7s for the platform (i7 740QM) and reworked an old LGA775 IHS to fit on it, so I won't crack the bare die when installing a cooler.
Fun as an experiment, SO not worth buying for a real system. Funny that they sell that stuff new, though. Same seller also sold an LGA1155 board with nVME support and weird abominations like that.
