Acer Wants EVGA's Spot: RTX 4090 with 3-Slot Water Cooling & AMD RX [REDACTED]

In this video, we get to look at Acer's foray into the GPU market as it vies for EVGA's former spot -- something they directly confirmed to us -- and tries to break out of just being pre-builts. Acer has its new Orion X small form factor mini-ITX gaming PC & standalone case, and this water-cooled RTX 4090 is included in that. Currently, NVIDIA has not approved Acer to be a board partner -- but enough groundswell interest from the community could encourage NVIDIA to change its stance. Maybe Acer is big enough that it concerns NVIDIA. Acer is approved for Intel, though, and previously made the BiFrost Arc card. Acer also has AMD cards on the way and just launched an RX 7600 -- and it showed us a mechanical only prototype for an AMD card.

Hello Steve, what are the temps with this rad compared to a regular aircooled 4090? I have the MSI 4090 Ventus x3 which is the exact same 3 slot size as this Acer one and fits inside my Lian Li A4 H20 but runs toasty in the 70-75 C range when gaming. As an engeneer im quite sceptical of any significant improvements because of the extremelly narrow space thats left between this custom rad and the PCB unless the static pressure of those slim 10cm. fans is somehow enough to push all the hot air through and for that to happen those rad fins must be really diluted to the point it may not have any benefits at all.

you would think by now this guy would know to KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF OF METAL SURFACES ON ANY ELECTRONICS! HUMANS SECRETE SALT AND ACID and everytime you touch metal surfaces with your hands you are contaminating the metal with a corrosive substance. I would not let this clown anywhere near a production area and should be shown the door until he learns some basic fundamentals of handling electronics. I will not be buying any Acer products since their controls are obviously substandard. Go ahead and finger those mosfets too while you are at it since you cannot be bothered to be grounded either!

Acer is full of imagination nowadays . Doesn't look bad but I wonder what temperature those pumps can handle. At some point, watercooling parts like radiators or pumps handle 60C . I don't think that 4090 will allow those pumps to run 60C all day. All in one piece with VRM and everything, it needs to be well secured with some strong screws. Good review. Looks better than the thermal pads. If I would have the money for a 4090, I expect the best thermal compound transfer, make diamond cool those GPU or liquid metal or super carbon based thermal paste.

I once owned a Acer prebuilt pc, the Orion 7000, and ended up returning it because their 120mm aio did not cool nicely with a 12900k, terribly loud fans, Green heatsink-less motherboard and ram was also pretty unpleasantly. I can t say enough how impressed I am with the changes the team at Acer brought to the Orion X. Super interesting stuff.
You guys definitely needs to make an in depth review/ analysis once these hit shelf s. It s not often we as a community can universally agree upon first impressions that a pre-built pc is impressive.

I don't think much of Acer as a manufacturer in general because of negative past experiences I've had. I used to own a cheap Acer Laptop and it was such a regret to buy. Bluescreens and the drive deciding to die, using the warranty, having to wait 2-3 months and after few weeks the same cycle repeating several times again without fixing the purchased product... I was getting a bit mad and wanted my money refunded back completely, which they at least did. From there I decided to stay away from Acer.

I've only ever bought EVGA cards. 7800GT -> 770 Ti -> 1070 Ti -> 3070 Ti (a mistake; isn't a 1440p Ultra card anymore, but that's not EVGA's fault).
The 770 Ti died on me, but they took care of it, so I've continued to buy cards from them. It's that simple. They make good PSUs now. I'd buy motherboards from them if they made reasonable ones.
Their AIO... eh... It's old.
That said, 4090s don't appear to be thermally constrained, so the different models are kinda irrelevant.

Mounting the radiator directly on the PCB eliminates the advantage a radiator has over a copper tube heatsink, which is it's ability to draw cool air from outside the case directly through the heat exchanger or exhaust 100% of the heat from the processor out of the case.
I would guess this would out perform a traditional heatsink in low usage/idle scenarios because of the fluid being circulated by a pump, but it would perform the same or worse under extended full GPU load.

So, I have yet to watch the video and i just want to share a thought that i had when you Steve was looking at the orion there. I cant help but feel that AIO GPUS like this are the next logical step, were already seeing intel hit the actual limits of the silicone itself and as a result, intel have made a CPU that is almost impossible to cool. for graphics heavy games, i hate to say that as silicone advances and parts get hotter, this may be the future of integrated coolers
reply

I do have a question about this cooler. With CPU AIOs the proper installation method is to never place the pump and block as the highest point in the loop to avoid air getting trapped in the microfins or pump further on in the life of the cooler.
Wouldn't the cooler on this card suffer from the same issue with a normal card orientation? The microfins are the highest or almost highest point in the loop so in theory you could get air trapped there.

The problem Acer has is their brand image. I know lots of people who have grown hesitant going with anything Acer-branded because of how terrible their Aspire laptops were back in the late 2000's/early 2010's. Even today, you'll find plenty of users with bad experiences with their Nitro laptops. Maybe it's a sampling bias because they simply move a lot of volume. On the other hand, Asus doesn't seem to have this problem.

only one note: this is the top-end product in the line, and will likely be used for many, many years - if those pumps arent realistically user-replaceable, then this is a 4090 waiting to not be used ever again once they die. i like that the integrated AIO CLC has no hoses/fittings to wear out and leak, but the pumps will end the lifetime of the product a few years down the line, or sooner.

Hey Steve - Do you have a recommendation for an ATX case that still has a 5.25 bay in it? I was considering fractal but just watched your review makes me question their thermals. It s going to run a home lab server with a6000 or 4090 in it - only real requirement is the 5.25 bay for a legacy device I want to keep. Noise not as much of a concern vs keeping temps down.

Looks good. Can't imagine it would be cheap mind. Can't blame Nvidia for wanting to approve its partners tbh. The problem partners have is the Founders Edition cards these days. The 4090, despite its size, was a massive leap forward for Nvidia in design, that was a great video Steve (and who for whoever makes the cards for Nvidia).
reply

not convinced. how would water transfer heat over very short distances any better then heat pipes?
i would bet a good bottle of pilsener that it will not cool any better then a conventional desing.
so, i appriciate acer trying to find a nice in the market, but neither a blower hybrid nor this card will get them a fan base.

reply

not gonna lie this has to be one of the coolest designs, and maybe im a crazy person but i do like the blower style fan i think they just look beautiful. But this seems like something i would but if needed. as far as self repair it looks like a jungle to get down in there. so ill wait until we see some proformance numbers.
