No More Cables (Sort Of): MSI Motherboards Moving Cables to the Back

This video shows MSI's B650M Project Zero motherboard, which aims to move the motherboard cables to the back of the board. It's not technically a 'form factor' yet, but it is something that ASUS, MSI, and Gigabyte are all working toward. The only purpose is for reducing cable clutter -- there's no functional (as in, power) advantage to doing this, so the biggest challenge is getting enough consumers to care as there's no real support for cases right now.

I would love to have no cables in the front, I always find the cable routing part of PC builds the most tedious (especially if you build for someone who wants RGB and glass panel). But this only really feels viable if it becomes a new standard. I would also love for the GPU to get most all of their power from the motherboard (adding power from 2x8-pins), or at least being able to plug in the cables from the back of the GPU. I definitely think there's a market for zero cables ... if not for custom builds and those who build their own cases, or if the manufacturer has super sleak series of cases/motherboards and GPUs for this specific setup.

Interesting, I've been suggesting having connectors on the back of the motherboard for something like a year+ now. I also suggested moving the power connector to the back (bottom, the place nearest to the motherboard) of the video card and integrating it with another mounting point (anti-sag). That's at least for higher ends video cards that are also longer and heavier. This way you can plug in the power cable from the back of the case and have no cables hanging in the front. This will get rid of additional weight of cables pulling the card down (less flexing force). Easy cable management and no more need for these looong power cables.

Having all of the connectors at the back seems like a good idea until you realize that it makes the board unusable with the majority of cases on the market. The only way I see this changing is if enough case manufacturers start including openings in the back for those connectors but the issue is also that those connectors aren't always in the exact same spot so the openings may need to be fairly large to accommodate all or most motherboards like this. The fact that this serves very little practical purpose probably dooms this concept to being a feature that will probably remain very rare.

I think a curious but good alternative would be to have hanging short ribbon/flat cables that are attached to the board, but have the ports at their ends so you just have to insert them into the chassis holes/grommets where now at the back you insert all cables into them. Kind of what cable extensions already do, but since they're built with the boards their design blends in better. This also eliminates the issue of the chassis not having the right cutouts for back-facing ports. Back-facing ports are honestly good as an innovation though, if they become a standard.

So you get a B650M Project Zero & then Total F K Up the Concept with a nVIDIA GPU & their STOOPID UGLY Dongle
That Case does have some very interesting concepts, as for a case compatible with the Project Zero I guess it would be just moving where the current Holes for Cabling is to match the Mobo Sockets, but there would need to be a Design Standard for ATX/M-ATX/ITX implemented between the Partners so you dont end up with a Mobo Panel that is Swiss Cheese to accomodate all the different designs.

I'd love to try it out. Would make me much more likely to hang the case on the wall as a rgb piece of art. Would also make water cooling much easier to install/maintain as well as bring a lot more focus to the artistry of your build.
Second the idea of having some sort of PDB behind the mb to plug everything into with relatively short runs and a multi cable hod from the psu. Could also simplify things for new builders, if the pdb has clear labeling all over it. I'd pay extra for that.

I like it. Even if there is discord between manufacturers in implementation, case manufacturers will have to consider the lack of standardization and design cases in a way that leaves a lot of room for differing standards and weird implementation, and so it'd give us a new sort of experimentation era until someone comes out with the one standard that consumers unanimously agree with. It'd also give the consumers some leeway to do experimentation themselves.

Really good idea from MSI with the Connectors on the Back. Then again, standardization is pretty nice to have. It won't be financially attractive to provide 2 different tooled insides of the same cases. To find widespread adoption we would have to force it as a standard. Most poeple won't like to be forced into MSI Mainboards just because they like this approach to Connectors.

If they are looking to break ground into a new standard then perhaps look to having all the connectors being fed into a single mini breakout board that can be connected via a large (and flexible) ribbon cable to be able to route it around the various case designs. Much like a fan or LED controller has a breakout board that can be routed to the back and easily maintained.

There's one rig that will support the backside connectors.
It's an open air (bench) in which the board has higher standoffs than usual and should theoretically work with that board.
Considering you could mount that bench set into another case i think something really clean couls come out of it.
I'm down for it as I'm stashing cash away for the post 7K series from amd.

I would like this to become a readily available standard. If this is sufficiently supported by available cases, then I would be interested. I wonder whether existing cases with sufficient width will have refit kits made, using some sort of interstitial spacer / standoff plate between the case and the mobo, to create the space required for running cables through.

Project: More Cables in the back of your PC: might look nicer, but is also harder to maintain in my eyes since the back of cases are already full in more grown/extended builds. The current case holes which lead to the front of the mb atleast have the advantage, that cables are seperate. This has to be checked in an actual build in my eyes, before it is good.

I seriously question what are the problems being solved here. Everything in this video seems to exist purely to solve an issue caused by the case owner wanting a specific aesthetic. I could see the cables in the back being a useful feature on say a small form factor case that supports it but zero need for it in a big ATX case. Same for vertical mounted GPU.

Cables on the back i'm all for it. all the cables come from the back. It makes a lot of sense to have the sockets.. where the cables are.
Aesthetically, the change is minor for those who cable manage their cases.. but the lazy ones will at last have a clean build, whether they like it or not :)

I don't know, man. Moving all the cables to the back just for some minor aesthetics and cable-airflow reasons, don't seem to outweigh the MASSIVE headache of cable management and compatibility issues. Like, 5% of the market cares about what a case looks like on their desk. The rest of us just want to get it done and leave it to the side.
