AMD is announcing the Ryzen 5 5600X3D -- except the launch is being handled entirely by Microcenter, including distribution of news, press releases, review samples, and handling of the product. The R5 5600X3D is a peculiar launch: It will be exclusive to Microcenter and, from what the retailer told us, it will be in-store only. Supply is expected to last maximally 3-6 months. The 5600X3D is likely the final AM4 chip that will ever launch, technically extending the platform's life into 2023. Aaron: I'm happy AMD was able to turn around and sell us it's trash. Lol. But in all sincerity, I'm glad to see them making something and not wasting anything, and also Micro Center genuinely deserves at least this little bit if it gets people in their doors. I use a 5600X So I doubt that the performance difference will give me any reason for me to try to run out and get one. I'm not really concerned about missing out on launching a part in limited areas on an aging platform that likely wont out-perform enough to drive sales. Maybe a few people still hanging on to their 3000 series Ryzen's will benefit the most and get some more longevity out of their system before having to swap to a whole new platform.

The ideal scenario for consumers would have been to have the 5600X3D be sold online directly by AMD through a limited sale, cause at this point the customer base is going to be very specific, aka people with older AM4 gaming builds looking to upgrade.
What they're doing now though is probably much easier for them logistically, but this means not a lot of potential DIY customers will have access to it. Microcenter offering cheap packages to help move remaining AM4 mobo stocks isn't bad, depending on what they have available though they could use that opportunity to make cheap gaming focused predbuilts.
All considered, just not having it all go to e-waste is nice. Now as much as having that chip available everywhere would have been better, in the end I think the market for it standalone is pretty niche - I don't know anyone who could have considered it who wouldn't be able to spend the premium for a 5800X3D instead. I'm not pissed, just happy for the people who will be able to enjoy that part and save a bit of money on their upgrade.

I'm from Europe and I agree that this entire launch is bizarre. I will admit that I am disappointed we won't get to try these CPUs without massively overpaying from them. While I do know of CPUs and GPUs only sold in specific markets this is the first time I heard of a CPU being available at only one retailer in one country. With that being said it's worth remembering that the lack of defective dies doesn't prevent AMD from making more 5600X3D CPUs by cutting down non-defective dies to fill in the gap in supply. I know for a fact they did this in the past. The fact they aren't doing this and relying only on the defective dies suggests that they simply don't think it would make sense as a product and I agree that it probably wouldn't make sense given the rest of the product stack with the 5800X3D making more sense for people interested in keeping their AM4 gaming systems going for as long as possible while the 5600 non-X and 5700X make more sense for budget oriented builders.

It's better than ewaste, but I also feel disappointed it's US-only. The US always gets CPUs earlier than us, and now they're also getting an exclusive part. So yeah, I'm not thrilled.
To be honest I think AMD has been pretty fair to the EU though, I don't recall any major issues. Whereas with Intel, they launched the i3-10100(F) and i3-10105(F), but retailers here were left completely in the dark on when they would actually get any. I bought one and then cancelled my order 6 months later because they still hadn't got a clue when they would come... and I was the first to order one, from what they told me. They just hadn't gotten any yet. I think it took about a year in the end. Absurd. Unfortunately we don't have a Dutch/European GN who would have produced some beautiful tech journalism about it.

I'm not a potential buyer of this, I still fill kind of dumbfounded why they wouldn't decide to sell globally through the AMD site. Making such things exclusive to a country is already kind of a punch in the face most of the times, this adds another layer for being available only from one retailer, but as it is already outside of my country the feeling is pretty much the same. Even though as I said, I am not really interested in the product, not having access to it makes me feel kind of discriminated against, as we value customers in that country, more than we value customers in yours .
As for keeping old AM4 alive, I think it is great for everyone, and getting new products for it is equally great, would be nice if the world could have access to those products though.

I have to say this is a weird one, but an extremely limited launch to move through this silicon is preferable to just throwing it away or grinding it up. I guess the number of these things must be tiny if they are just essentially dumping a bunch of CPUs in Microcenter's lap and walking away from it, letting Microcenter handle marketing and release and all that.
My one concern is that the price of the full fat 5800X3D has fallen a lot recently, I just picked one up for 280 at my local Microcenter. With the announced price of the 5600X3D I'm wondering if the price gap might be too small for these to move? That said it wouldn't surprise me if they aggressively bundled the things to clear out their old motherboard and DDR4 stock.

reply

It's weird for sure but I'm all for this. Not only does AMD themselves just not scrap these CPUs but they also extend the longivity of previous gen parts with this. There is still a clear line going from DDR4 RAM and MB into DDR 5 RAM and especially MBs that support DDR5 cost wise. Considering that prices for pretty much everything is getting out of hand and making budget builds getting increasingly harder. This also actually pairs perfectly with the disaster that is 4060+Ti. Since there is no point going past 3060 Ti or 6700 XT, which is also previous gen, people that waited and got disappointed by 4060 can now do a full system upgrade as budget as possible on last gen instead if they wanted to.

I'm from Italy and considering we can get a 5800x3d for 300 euros, if the 5600x3d starts at 230 dollars and it's indeed limited with VAT applied we would end up with a very similar price at a worse value (6 cores vs 8). Even if single core performance were near, the TDP is the same so I don't really see an advantage for AMD to bring it to europe (expecially with low stock). As six core is still an interesting spot for gaming, I expect for it to be a good CPU, but since even AMD seems to be moving in the direction of p-cores/e-cores this could be just a test to see if they can save more silicon for future CPUs Architectures. (like a beta test to see if customers end up with issues and stuff)

What AMD is doing with Microcenter is great, even if it is not accessible for most people, but I think manufacturers could do more to reduce waste.
As an example, say AMD produces a batch of 5800x3d that end up with defects that only allow two cores to work, without the 3d cache and only half the ram addressable. They could list it, with the specific defects, for sale direct from factory for a few years before recycling them. That time would allow DIYers and other product manufacturers to buy them. Products like routers, set top boxes, smart home controllers, etc, could probably use such a product (depending on other factors like power consumption, etc) with a little of smart engineering.

If it's gonna be sold exclusively at microcenter it's DOA, why? For many reasons such as:
1- 7600x + 16gb DDR5 is about 218 .
2- 7700x + 32gb DDR5 is between 300 and 310
3- 5600x + B450 motherboard is around 187
4- 12700K + Z690 + 16gb DDR4 for 350 .
And possibly many better deals, again at Microcenter.
I don't know why suddenly everyone's happy that e-waste costs only 230 , and on top of that expect these chips to run hotter, require more voltage and consume more power than the 5800x3d because they're essentially defective chips that did not meet quality requirements.
Don't feed AMDs greed, save a little bit more money and get a new DDR5 platform.

In the UK I have a new low end 5600 if i were to think of upgrading it , i would consider the 5800x3d for the extra cores as well as cache and have a mboard that will take that cpu so that was the final upgrade of this system i was intending. If that cpu had been around earlier and arrived alongside say the 5600 it would have been a potential selection but as its using up scraps , fair play to taking the small amount available and making it a special though a market outlet for those who may feel it's a viable option for their systems at this time, I don't feel with AM5 now up and running i'm missing out on that particular processor.

With that price it wont be as demanded as I would expected. I'm currently figuring out new rig and made excel spreadsheet where I put various numbers and prices and it gives me how much extra (or not) performance I get from certain configuration compared to cost. With 230 its same as 5600 for me. When I first heard of it I assumed 200 and that would be lovely but with 230 not much loss especially that 5800X3D is still widely available.
Would love to see how this CPU handle CPU intensive games, maybe some DX9/11 stuff that is heavy on CPU. Still playing Guild Wars 2 and darn this game really need strong CPU to handle WvW

Picking physical stores at least prevents bots from buying it all and microcenter does a really good job at limiting how many of something someone can buy. During the GPU crisis, they would ID you and get your address to confirm their 1 GPU per household per month (i think thats what it was) policy which makes it near impossible for scalpers to buy them all up since theyd need multiple addresses and either multiple fake IDs or multiple friends from different addresses, and the first option is like a super felony, and we all know scalpers tend not to have many friends lol. Glad its microcenter
reply

I think it is pretty cool that they are doing this as opposed to just throwing them out. I think it is cool to give the launch to microcenter as opposed to other outlets as well because these rare parts are more likely to end up in the hands of enthusiasts and other folks that find this hardware interesting as opposed to scalpers trying to turn a quick buck because of its rarity. I remember wanting to get my hands on a 3300x but it was almost never in stock anywhere after its launch. I happen to be 20 minutes from a microcenter and might pick up one of these just for the novelty.
reply

Full disclosure, I'm in the US and even close to a Microcenter. However I'm not really the target market for this cpu since I've no plans to buy a last-gen lower-tier cpu. As far as I'm concerned, this is a recycling effort that is preventing e-waste of otherwise un-sellable CPUs. I'm all for having these types of chips, as long as they continue to be properly supported by AMD. Additionally, having more lower-cost CPUs in the market to further bring/keep prices down is good for consumers; which is another tick in the positive column from my point of view.

That price point puts it in no-mans land. But I don't think that matters given how limited the availability is. If you're out to build a new PC, a 7600 makes more sense at that price, and if you're out to build a super-budget gaming PC, there are serviceable budget options for 100 less (5600). I don't see this driving other sales for Micro Center. This is the sort of thing you buy as a standalone purchase to throw into an aging AM4 build before you flip it to someone else as a gaming PC (if the sorts of people that do that even care that much).

I upgraded my Ryzen 1600 system to a 5600X a year ago, just replaced the CPU. If this had been available then, I would have gone with the X3D, but at this point, I'm not spending any more money on that. I have another system for VR that was built new with a 5600X, before the 7000 series came out. That might need an upgrade, but still I don't see spending more on a dead platform. Anyway, as for Microcenter, you can pick up some great deals in bundles. A coworker picked up a Ryzen 7900X, Asus B650E Motherboard and 32 Gig RAM for 550 US.

I think the positive here is that the limited distribution means it won't be vaporware for those who can go to a store and get one. If this were a global launch it would just be listed as out of stock like every piece of hardware during the pandemic. Maybe this will upset some, but the fact is its a last gen part. Maybe AMD has alterier movies? Maybe if this goes well AMD and MicroCenter will be partnering more in the future. Perhaps the exclusive retailer for AMD reference parts?
reply

I've been holding onto a 3700X since 2019 in a rig I set up during the pandemic and rarely use (it's more like a back up now, since I moved my main rig downstairs where it is cooler). I have been thinking about upgrading it to a 5800X3D, but I can't justify the price. So I am keen to see how this one does, since I have a Microcenter near by. I rarely pop up in the store thou, since I am like a kid in a candy store when I get there (like I want EVERYTHING there).

Living in Germany. Not really pissed about the 5600X3D - you get the 5800X3D for 289 (incl. taxes) easily, soooo whatever.
And honestly - if the other option is to throw them away...hell no.
But I still am so pissed about MicroCenter itself being US only... :D I want one over here in Germany, around Cologne, Dusseldorf, Dortmund and so on it might even do quite good compared to the shops you currently have (like Cyberport or notebooksbilliger).
